A TikTok video is circulating showing a baggage handler at LAX carelessly throwing guitars onto the airport tarmac, sparking outrage online. The video was shared by a college student and highlights the potential for damage to these delicate instruments.
The video quickly gained over four million views in just one week, and it sparked a lot of angry reactions from viewers who were surprised by how little effort the handler seemed to put in.
Nick Ruiz, a 21-year-old college student, filmed the incident and shared it online with the message, “Hope your guitars are okay.”
On March 16th, Ruiz noticed someone handling luggage outside the plane window while traveling from Los Angeles (LAX) back to New York. He was at Terminal 4 when he saw them.
He explained in a statement to Jam Press that the nearest aircraft was a Boeing 777 which had just landed from Los Angeles. He then took the same plane back to New York’s JFK airport, and his immediate reaction was to begin recording video.
Because of Ruiz’s quick thinking, many viewers – numbering in the tens of thousands – are voicing their concerns online about the handler’s mistreatment of the instruments. One person even commented, “If you dislike your job that much, please don’t work there!”
The commenter added, “It’s really upsetting as a musician to see this happen. So much passion and dedication went into those recordings!”
“That should be a fireable offense,” another suggested. “That’s just egregious.”
“Looks more intentional than careless,” another wrote.
How to protect your instruments from damage during travel
The video of United Airlines breaking a guitar is well-known, but it’s not clear which airline the baggage handler in the new video worked for. Fortunately, the US Department of Transportation offers advice to musicians traveling with instruments to help keep them safe during flights.
They recommend travelers pack instruments in a sturdy, hard-shell case labeled ‘Fragile’, and cushion them with rolled-up clothes or bubble wrap to protect them from rough handling during transport.

The US Department of Transportation advises travelers with stringed instruments to loosen the strings before flying to avoid breakage during transport. They also recommend carrying the instrument on the plane with you, or, for larger instruments, even buying a separate seat to ensure its safety.
A recent airplane incident gained attention online when fighter jets were called in to address a passenger attempting to illegally use stolen frequent flyer miles.
