After his memorable Super Bowl halftime performance, Bad Bunny is set to star in his first major movie role. According to Deadline, the artist, whose real name is Benito Martínez Ocasio, will be the lead in Porto Rico, a film marking the directorial debut of award-winning rapper Residente. The movie is described as a sweeping historical drama with western elements, and a tribute to Puerto Rico. It brings together Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu and writer Alexander Dinelaris, with Iñárritu as an executive producer and Dinelaris co-writing the script with Residente.
The film stars Bad Bunny, alongside acclaimed actors Javier Bardem (known for No Country for Old Men), Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings), and Edward Norton (Birdman). Initially announced in 2023, the movie was said to be based on the life of Puerto Rican revolutionary José Maldonado Román, nicknamed Águila Blanca (White Eagle). However, it’s now uncertain if the film will still tell his story or if it will be a completely new one. Residente shared some thoughts about the project, saying…
Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to create a film about Puerto Rico. The island’s real story has often been debated and misunderstood. This film is my way of celebrating our identity, sharing it with the passion and truthfulness it deserves.
Bad Bunny’s Stardom Continues To Rise

Netflix
It’s been an incredible month for Bad Bunny! Not only did he win a Grammy for Album of the Year and deliver a history-making Super Bowl performance, but he’s also landed the lead role in Porto Rico. I was so excited to see his Super Bowl show – it really was a standout moment, and so many people seemed to agree! Even though some conservative groups voiced their opposition, the show still drew in a massive 128.2 million viewers – the fourth highest ever! Everyone was talking about it, and it definitely felt like the highlight of the whole Super Bowl.
Though Porto Rico will be Benito Martínez Ocasio’s first time as the main actor in a film, he’s appeared in movies before. He’s had notable roles in Bullet Train, Caught Stealing, and Happy Gilmore 2. He was originally set to star as El Muerto in a Spider-Man spin-off film from Sony, but that project was canceled.
