Playground Productions, which brought back the popular Backyard Sports games last year, is creating its first animated special. They’re teaming up with Lighthouse Studios – one of the animation companies known for The Cuphead Show – to adapt Backyard Baseball into a 2D animated story called Sticky Situation.
Tiffany Haddish, known for her roles in ‘Girls Trip’ and ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ will be the voice of Kiesha Phillips, and Arturo Castro, from ‘Tron: Ares’ and ‘Narcos,’ will voice Pablo Sanchez. However, the upcoming animated ‘Backyard Baseball’ short appears to center around the character Stephane “Bubbles” Morgan, and Ego Nwodim, a veteran of ‘Saturday Night Live,’ will voice him. Nwodim recently voiced Twiggy in ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie’.
Opening Day has arrived at Steele Stadium, but there’s a problem for the team’s star player, Stephanie ‘Bubbles’ Morgan! She can’t find her lucky bubble gum – the one she always needs to play her best. With only half an hour until the game starts, the Backyard Kids rush off on a frantic search to find it and save the season.
The special, Sticky Situation, will also feature Chris Mintz-Plasse, known for his roles in Superbad and Kick-Ass, Donald Faison from Clueless and Scrubs, Ashleigh Crystal Hairston of Craig of the Creek, and Adam Pally, who starred in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.
Playground Games recently brought back the classic game Backyard Baseball ’97 with a remastered version. They haven’t stopped there! Since then, they’ve also re-released updated versions of Backyard Football ’99, Backyard Baseball ’01, and Backyard Soccer ’98 on computers and mobile devices. And there’s more to come – remasters of Backyard Basketball ’01 and Backyard Hockey ’02 are currently in development.
The new animated special, ‘Sticky Situation,’ will debut on the Backyard Sports YouTube channel and at Dave & Buster’s across the United States. An exact release date hasn’t been announced yet.
