Over the years, television has seen many fantastic space operas that have truly highlighted the sci-fi genre. Shows like Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, and Star Trek are prime examples, but Babylon 5 arguably set the standard for modern sci-fi. Originally released in 1994, all five seasons of this influential series are now available to stream for free on The Roku Channel.
I’ve always been captivated by Babylon 5, created by J. Michael Straczynski. It’s set in the mid-2200s and follows the lives of the human military personnel and alien ambassadors who work together on a massive, five-mile-long space station. The show, which originally aired from 1994 to 1998 and starred actors like Michael O’Hare, Bruce Boxleitner, Claudia Christian, and Jerry Doyle, was truly groundbreaking – it even won two Emmys during its run, recognizing its incredible special effects and makeup!
‘Babylon 5’ Revolutionized Sci-Fi on Television
Before Babylon 5, most science fiction TV shows didn’t have ongoing storylines. Each episode was usually a self-contained adventure – a new problem would appear, get solved, and then be completely forgotten in the next episode when a different challenge arose.
J. Michael Straczynski broke new ground with Babylon 5 by creating a detailed five-year story plan from the beginning. Events that seemed small in the first season often became important later on, leading many to describe the show as a novel told through television. Unlike many sci-fi series where things stay the same, the characters in Babylon 5 grew and changed over time.
In a 2019 interview with Newsarama (as reported by GamesRadar), J. Michael Straczynski explained his mindset at the time: he believed that even if his ambitious idea failed, the consequences wouldn’t be dire. As he put it, ‘They can’t kill you for that, they can’t eat you, they can’t put you in TV prison, so why not take a chance?’
CGI Was All the Rage in ‘Babylon 5’
Babylon 5 didn’t just change sci-fi storytelling on TV, it also transformed how the genre looked. It was the first show to rely entirely on computer-generated imagery (CGI) for its visuals and space battles – a technique that would later become standard. The show moved away from traditional methods like miniatures and stop-motion, completely redefining what was possible. Although the effects might not look as impressive today, they were groundbreaking at the time and made Babylon 5 a must-watch, as viewers eagerly anticipated each new visual spectacle from J. Michael Straczynski and his team.

That’s why Babylon 5 is considered a groundbreaking sci-fi series. Its fans are still incredibly dedicated, and a revival has been discussed, with creator J. Michael Straczynski potentially involved. However, a premiere isn’t likely in the near future, as the project has repeatedly faced setbacks and recently encountered another challenge.
Warner Bros. Discovery currently owns the rights to Babylon 5. There’s been talk of them merging with Netflix, but until that happens, plans for a Babylon 5 reboot are on hold, and it’s unclear what the future holds for the series.
