Aziz Ansari Revealed The Master Of None Episode That Inspired Good Fortune, And I Was Happy To Hear That It’s The Show’s Best One

Aziz Ansari is well-known for his role on the TV show *Parks and Recreation*, where he popularized the phrase “treat yo’ self.” He also won several Emmy Awards for *Master of None*, a critically acclaimed and popular Netflix series that ran from 2015 to 2021. *Master of None* was a significant success, helping to establish Ansari as a respected writer. Now, he’s expanding into filmmaking with his new movie, *Good Fortune*.

It’s no surprise that the new movie draws heavily from the stories Aziz Ansari shared in his earlier Netflix series. I recently talked to Ansari about the upcoming release of *Good Fortune*, and when I brought up *Master of None*, he explained how it influenced the film.

You can definitely see similar themes in both *Master of None* and this new project, especially with the storyline involving my father. In the *Master of None* episode, ‘New York, I Love You,’ we followed the lives of everyday people – a taxi driver, a doorman, and a deaf woman, for example. This new project is similar in that it immerses you in a different perspective, following Arj as he works at a hardware store and does odd jobs through a TaskRabbit-like service. It’s about trying to understand life from someone else’s point of view.

The second season of *Master of None* mainly focuses on Dev, played by Aziz Ansari, finding love in Italy. It’s one of my all-time favorite TV seasons, largely because it takes the story in a different direction than what we usually see with these characters, and it’s full of references to classic Italian romantic movies.

The anthology episode Ansari referenced, “New York, I Love You,” was bold in its creativity, even using long, silent scenes to help viewers experience life from the perspective of a deaf woman. While *Good Fortune* doesn’t attempt anything quite so ambitious, it shares a similar approach to *Master of None* by centering the story around Arj, an ordinary person working in the gig economy – someone you might easily overlook in a large city like Los Angeles, where the film is set.

The new show, *Good Fortune*, was created with Alan Yang, who previously worked with Aziz Ansari on *Master of None*, making this a natural collaboration. Interestingly, an earlier episode of *Master of None* briefly mentioned Keanu Reeves – a surprising hint that he would later star in *Good Fortune* as the angel Gabriel. Ansari has raved about working with the *John Wick* star, who remarkably managed to get injured on set, despite avoiding injuries throughout five action-packed *John Wick* movies.

Interested in seeing a movie? *Good Fortune* hits theaters on October 17th as part of the 2025 film lineup. And if you’re looking for *Master of None*, it’s still available to stream on Netflix.
