Despite a couple of recent projects that didn’t quite hit the mark, and a somewhat average season of The Bear, Ayo Edebiri delivered a standout performance as a guest star on HBO’s I Love LA. Since gaining recognition for her role as Syd in The Bear, Edebiri has quickly become a rising star in film and television, notably shining in projects like Theater Camp, Big Mouth, and Inside Out 2.
Edebiri’s promising start in film faced some setbacks this year with two movies that didn’t resonate with critics or audiences: the A24 thriller Opus and Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt. However, the issues weren’t with Edebiri’s performance—the scripts were the weak point. She recently reminded everyone of her comedic talent with a standout guest appearance in the second episode of I Love LA.
Ayo Edebiri Just Stole The Show As A Guest Star On HBO’s I Love LA
Ayo Edebiri made a surprise appearance on HBO’s new comedy, I Love LA, reuniting with her Bottoms co-star, Rachel Sennott. HBO intentionally kept her role a secret to give viewers a fun surprise.
I was totally blown away by Ayo Edebiri in season one, episode two of I Love LA! She played this popstar client of Charlie’s, Mimi Rush, and honestly, she just stole the scene. She looked so different and did a whole English accent, it took me a few minutes to even realize it was her!
As someone from England, I notice when actors struggle with English accents, but Ayo Edebiri really nailed hers. Beyond that, she perfectly portrayed the character’s snobbery as a celebrated artist, the confidence of a famous person with a huge fanbase, and the self-importance of someone lost in their own world and beliefs.
Edebiri’s Cameoing Popstar Is More Interesting Than Any Of I Love LA’s Main Characters
To be honest, I found Mimi to be a much more engaging and likeable character than most of the leads in I Love LA. While True Whitaker and Josh Hutcherson are great in the show, the rest of the cast—a group of self-absorbed influencers—are generally quite annoying.
When I reviewed I Love LA, I noticed that every character acts like they’re the most important one. It reminds me of Girls, but instead of one central character, everyone is like Marnie. Honestly, I’d much prefer a show completely focused on Ayo Edebiri playing her character Mimi over another season of I Love LA.
