When Amazon Web Services experienced an outage, many owners of Bored Ape NFTs temporarily lost access to viewing their digital images.
On October 20th, Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a significant outage affecting many of its servers. As a result, numerous popular online services – including Fortnite, banking apps, and Duolingo – were unavailable for several hours.
More than 8 million people reported the outage on DownDetector, and it also affected smart beds and NFTs.
The popular Bored Ape NFTs, once highly sought after by celebrities and influencers for millions of dollars, experienced issues when platforms like OpenSea faced disruptions. This prevented owners from seeing their NFTs, even though they still technically owned them.
Bored Ape NFTs affected by AWS outage
According to Futurism, people who owned NFTs received an error message saying “Cannot load image,” along with the name of the specific NFT they owned.
“This ERC-721 NFT is not accessible due to an ongoing Amazon Web Services outage,” one said.
OpenSea responds to AWS outage
OpenSea acknowledged an issue on X (formerly Twitter) and apologized to its users. Chris Maddern explained that while the OpenSea website is working, several of its supporting services – like data storage and blockchain information – are down because of a problem with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
OpenSea has been having some issues for the last few hours, with the site being occasionally unavailable or experiencing more errors than usual. We understand this is frustrating, and we’re working hard to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible.
Here’s an update about OpenSea and internet services in general. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is currently experiencing major and prolonged issues. Essentially, their main East Coast data center isn’t working, causing many websites and services to be unavailable.

The AWS outage caused problems for many online services, and one of the most unusual effects was on smart beds.
Several users found their Eight Sleep beds stuck and unable to adjust. The company confirmed they were rolling out a temporary ‘outage mode’ to address the issue.
