Avengers: Secret Wars Is Now Confirmed To Suffer The Same Problem As Doomsday

As a huge Marvel fan, I was excited to hear the official release date for Avengers: Secret Wars, but it also made me a little worried. It looks like it might have the same box office challenges as Avengers: Doomsday. Both of these movies are meant to be the epic finales to the Multiverse Saga, and Marvel’s been planning their releases close together for a while now. While they’re both going to be massive events for the MCU, it seems like they’ll be competing with each other for audiences when they finally come out.

Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to come out on December 17, 2027, following Avengers: Doomsday by about a year. Now, Lionsgate has announced that the sequel to The Housemaid, titled The Housemaid’s Secret, will also be released on that same date, creating a box office competition between the two films.

Although The Housemaid 2 isn’t as widely known as a blockbuster like a Marvel movie, the first film performed incredibly well when it came out in December 2025, earning nearly $400 million globally – almost ten times its production cost. This makes the sequel a strong contender. Plus, The Housemaid 2 again features popular actresses Kirsten Dunst and Sydney Sweeney, and continues the story from Freida McFadden’s book series.

This news creates a similar situation for Avengers: Secret Wars as the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, set to release on December 18, 2026, the same day as the highly awaited Dune: Part Three. Despite the potential conflict, neither Disney nor Warner Bros. is planning to change the release dates of their big films, leading fans to jokingly call the situation “Dunesday.”

The already crowded release schedule for Avengers: Secret Wars just got more competitive. The Hunt for Gollum, a new Lord of the Rings film, is now set to come out on December 17, 2027 – the same day as Secret Wars. This means three big movies will be competing for audiences on that date. The Hunt for Gollum marks the first live-action Lord of the Rings film in over a decade and aims to revive the franchise, bringing back many of the original cast members.

The upcoming sixth-phase Marvel film has several strengths, including a large team of Avengers and direction from the highly successful Russo Brothers. Avengers: Secret Wars aims to replicate the massive success of Avengers: Endgame, which was once the highest-grossing movie ever made.
