The fourth and final trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has arrived in cinemas, and it hints at a major turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the plot of Avengers: Doomsday remains largely under wraps, the trailer confirms a large team of heroes will be involved, alongside the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
Beyond what we’ve already seen, it’s still unclear what Doctor Doom is planning or how all the heroes from across the multiverse and the main Marvel Cinematic Universe will connect in the upcoming movie. That’s why I appreciate Marvel’s decision to reveal in the final teaser that a major turning point – potentially the end of an era – is coming for the MCU.
Marvel’s New Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Sets Up A Huge Problem
The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday shifts focus to the Fantastic Four and the people of Wakanda, following previous trailers that highlighted Steve Rogers, Thor, and the X-Men. While seeing these two teams meet for the first time – with M’Baku encountering The Thing – was a cool moment, the trailer’s biggest reveal was actually its villain.
Tenoch Huerta reprises his role as Namor in the latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, following his first appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Marvel Studios shared a few details alongside Namor’s return, including the reappearance of Namora and Namor sporting his classic blue suit with a high collar. But the most significant reveal is that Talokan, the underwater kingdom, seems to have completely lost its water.
Namor and the people of Talokan are shocked to see a massive desert appearing before them. The most likely reason for this is an Incursion – a collision between universes – that’s putting the main Marvel Cinematic Universe Earth in danger. As two universes collide, things like Talokan’s water could be affected and drawn into the event.
Why Incursions Should Lead To The End Of The MCU (As We Know It)
The attack on Talokan could be an early warning of a larger multiverse collapse, similar to what’s expected in the next Avengers film. In a 2015 Marvel Comics storyline called Secret Wars, Doctor Doom gained the ability to change reality and used it to build Battleworld – a planet assembled from fragments of different universes, bringing characters from across the multiverse together.
Now that Marvel has confirmed ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will essentially restart the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the recent trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could be hinting at the events that will kick off that reboot. If the underwater kingdom of Talokan is threatened, it might force Namor to team up with Doctor Doom – something they’ve done in the comics before – and make the story of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ even more surprising.
