The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will present a different version of Steve Rogers than fans are accustomed to. The first trailer revealed Chris Evans will reprise his role after his character seemingly retired at the end of Avengers: Endgame, having traveled back in time to be with Peggy Carter. The trailer made it clear this Steve Rogers is no longer actively serving as Captain America, showing him putting away his old suit and appearing fully retired.
According to Alex Perez, a trusted source at Cosmic Circus, Steve Rogers won’t be Captain America in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday.
I’m happy to have everything in one place so I can clarify something. Captain America will be in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ played by Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson. Chris Evans will also return as Steve Rogers, but he won’t be playing Captain America in this film.
The upcoming story will show Steve Rogers, Captain America, in a new light. He won’t be the traditional superhero focused on missions and wielding his shield. Instead, we’ll see him as a father and husband, whose main priority is protecting his family – Peggy and their children – at all costs.

The teaser’s mention of Steve Rogers’ return strongly suggests he won’t be taking on the role of Captain America again. This makes sense, as Sam Wilson is currently the active Captain America within the Multiverse Saga.
Jeff Sneider, another source familiar with the project, confirmed what Perez said: Steve Rogers will become Nomad, a persona he’s known for in the comics. This will be a different take on the character than what audiences have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sneider originally reported this news back in December 2024.
I recently dove into the history of Marvel’s Nomad, and it’s a fascinating story. Back in 1974, after becoming deeply disappointed with the US government, Steve Rogers actually gave up being Captain America. He took on the identity of Nomad, which, fittingly, means “a man without a country.” It really spoke to his rejection of unquestioning patriotism. And the costume? It’s a striking dark blue and yellow uniform, complete with a mask. It was a bold move for the character and a really interesting period in his history.

This take on Steve Rogers, as a husband to Peggy Carter and a father, feels like a natural and welcome step forward in how the character is developed.

In Doomsday, Steve appears both more grown-up and emotionally exposed, and Doctor Doom might use this to his advantage – potentially keeping Steve from interfering or even eliminating him as a threat.
Chris Evans is reprising his role in the upcoming Marvel film, Avengers: Doomsday, alongside familiar faces from the Infinity Saga like Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, and Robert Downey Jr. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18th.
Avengers: Doomsday’s Reinvention of Steve Rogers Is a Win for the MCU

Honestly, seeing Chris Evans back as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday feels really good. They’ve done something smart by portraying him as either a wanderer, a family man, or a bit of both. It just adds a whole new layer of emotional weight to his return, and that’s a huge win for the MCU, in my opinion. It’s not just seeing the character again, it’s feeling something different with him.
The revelation that Steve Rogers has a son in Doomsday significantly impacts his potential storyline when he returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also connects to Doctor Doom’s strategy of targeting the children of major heroes, who he will soon battle in the upcoming conflict for the Multiverse.
This storyline creates a compelling new side of Steve Rogers, forcing him to grapple with the difficult choice between protecting his family and saving the Multiverse – a conflict that builds on his pursuit of happiness at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The introduction of a family also adds a fresh dimension to Steve’s character that hasn’t been fully seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before.
