Both The Iliad and The Odyssey are slated to be major motion pictures in 2026, and industry analysts are already predicting a competitive box office showdown between the two films.
According to Bloomberg, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be the highest-grossing film of 2026, surpassing all other releases, including Dune: Part Three. Bloomberg predicts it will be followed by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. They also believe the live-action Moana adaptation will be the lowest-earning movie that year.
Avengers: Endgame earned $2.8 billion, but those blockbuster numbers came before the pandemic and the recent struggles of Marvel films. According to Bloomberg, Christopher Nolan movies are currently seen as more reliable box office successes than franchises like Star Wars or Minions. While Dune: Part Three is predicted to perform well, Bloomberg doesn’t expect it to outperform Toy Story 5. Given the massive success of the Avengers movies, it makes sense that Bloomberg believes Marvel Studios will continue to achieve strong results at the box office.
Even if Avengers: Doomsday and The Odyssey don’t earn huge profits, Variety reports that 2026 is expected to be the most financially successful year for movie theaters since 2019. Gower Street Analytics predicts 2026 will surpass 2023’s $33.9 billion, exceeding the $42.3 billion earned in 2019.
Marvel Studios’ History With Box Office Numbers
For decades, Marvel Studios has been a huge success in theaters, consistently earning a lot of money even when critics and fans have mixed reactions. Box Office Mojo recently published a detailed look at the financial performance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To date, Avengers: Endgame remains Marvel’s highest-grossing film, earning $858.4 million domestically and a massive $2.798 billion worldwide.
After Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Black Panther were also huge successes. However, neither of those films earned over two billion dollars. It’s worth noting that Box Office Mojo tracks earnings from a film’s original release separately from any later re-releases. In 2020, Marvel brought Black Panther, Iron Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy back to theaters.

Okay, it’s way too soon to really know how the new Avengers movie will do, but as a huge fan, I’m feeling really confident it could match or even beat the numbers from Avengers: Endgame. Especially with how massive and universe-hopping the story in Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be, it feels like anything is possible!
Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
