Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Hints At Chris Hemsworth’s Final Marvel Movie

It’s been known for a while that Chris Hemsworth will be back as Thor, but we’re only now learning more about what’s next for the character.

A new trailer has been released, highlighting Thor. The clip shows Chris Hemsworth, as Thor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, praying for strength to defeat his upcoming enemies.

This strong reaction leads some to believe that Avengers: Doomsday will be Thor’s last movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given how important the upcoming fifth Avengers film – the 39th installment in the franchise – is expected to be, this idea seems plausible.

The latest trailer reveals Thor is facing a new challenge, and hints that Robert Downey Jr. might be playing Doctor Doom. Fans will remember that at the end of 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor became the adoptive father of Love, the resurrected child of Gorr the God-Butcher (played by Christian Bale, and portrayed by Hemsworth’s daughter, India). It’s believed their bond will play a significant role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.

Man, it’s wild to think that when Avengers: Doomsday finally comes out, it’ll have been over 15 years since Chris Hemsworth first played Thor! It feels like a natural place to wrap up his story, maybe even for good. Or, at least, that’s what a lot of us are thinking. I remember when Marvel really led us to believe Endgame was the end for a bunch of heroes, but they surprised us then, so who knows what they’ve got planned for Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027! It’s exciting, but also a little nerve-wracking, you know?

Captain America’s Avengers: Doomsday Return Has Also Been Teased

Alongside hints about Thor’s comeback, a trailer for the new Avengers: Doomsday movie has been shown before screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash. The trailer features another well-known Marvel character, played by actor Chris, and it’s generating a lot of excitement.

This trailer differs from the one for Thor by having no spoken dialogue and saving the reveal of a youthful Chris Evans as Steve Rogers for the very end. Like the Thor teaser, however, the theme of parenthood is central, with the trailer suggesting Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) had a child together – shown by Captain America cradling a baby.

After years of speculation, the trailer finally confirmed Chris Evans would return as Captain America, even though his character seemingly sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame. The film reveals that Steve Rogers secretly traveled back in time to ensure the Infinity Stones were properly replaced. He then lived out his life in the 1940s, the time of his original plane crash and decades-long icy slumber, and returned as an older man to explain everything to his friends.

The announcement didn’t mention Evans, and it was already full of surprises. It featured several actors from the older X-Men films, like Patrick Stewart and James Marsden, alongside current Marvel Cinematic Universe stars such as Anthony Mackie and cast members from the upcoming 2025 movies Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

It’s still surprising to many that Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. After recently winning an Academy Award for his work in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Downey Jr. first became a major mainstream star by originating the role of Iron Man in 2008, a character he played repeatedly until his heroic death in Avengers: Endgame.

Joe and Anthony Russo will direct the new film, with the script written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. So far, the story details haven’t been released beyond what’s been shown in trailers and promotional materials.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
