Marvel’s upcoming Avengers movie and the third Dune film are currently scheduled to open in theaters on the same day, December 11, 2026. Initially, many expected one of the films to change its release date, but with both now actively promoting themselves, it appears they’re sticking to the original plan, setting up a major box office competition nicknamed “Dunesday.”
The choice to release both Avengers and Dune at the same time is unexpected. Both are huge films with similar audiences. While Barbie and Oppenheimer created a buzz by attracting different groups of people, Avengers and Dune both aim for wide appeal with action-packed, PG-13 science fiction stories and big-name actors.
Both films are expected to be successful, even with a simultaneous release. However, they’re likely both underperforming because they came out at the same time. Finding a clear release window without significant competition was difficult, meaning they couldn’t easily move the dates without risking even more conflict.
Avengers: Doomsday Can Now Move Up To A Vacant December Weekend
Marvel Entertainment
December 2026 promises a packed month for moviegoers, with several highly anticipated releases. Beyond Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3, audiences can look forward to Robert Eggers’ Werwulf, another Jumanji film, and a third Angry Birds movie. Currently, the planned release dates are Jumanji 3 on December 11th, Doomsday and Dune 3 on December 18th, Angry Birds 3 on December 23rd, and Werwulf on December 25th.
Okay, so here’s the deal with the release schedule. Sony just pushed back Jumanji 3 to Christmas Day. Smart move, honestly. They clearly didn’t want to launch right before Doomsday and Dune 3 and get completely overshadowed in its second week. It’s a bit of a strategic retreat, but it leaves the December 11th weekend wide open now, which is interesting.
Either Doomsday or Dune: Part Three might now be released a week earlier. Although the Marvel movie is expected to earn more at the box office, it would likely benefit most from the change. This could be the only week where only one of these two sci-fi sequels is playing in theaters, making it easier for audiences to choose a movie that weekend.
If Marvel Studios releases the film, it will likely find itself in a position where no other major movies are competing with it. “Doomsday” is expected to be a big draw, and releasing it now could lead to exceptionally high opening weekend box office results – potentially breaking records.
Avengers: Doomsday Moving Up Can Give It An IMAX Release
Releasing Doomsday on December 11th could give it a strong start, because it would allow the film to be shown in IMAX theaters. Currently, Dune 3 has exclusive rights to IMAX screens, which means the new Avengers movie won’t be available in that premium format domestically during its opening weekend and for some time afterward.
Currently, no film has a deal for showing exclusively in IMAX theaters as of December 11th. While Greta Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia will have a two-week exclusivity window with Netflix, that period will be over by December 11th because the film releases on November 26th. Doomsday could begin showing in IMAX theaters as early as December 10th, making it ideal for opening night screenings.
Although some reports suggest Marvel isn’t worried about not releasing in IMAX, the delay of Jumanji 3 creates a great opportunity for them to move up the release date of Doomsday. This would allow it to avoid competing directly with Dune 3, enjoy a full week as the biggest movie in theaters, and benefit from a limited IMAX release, potentially making those showings highly sought after.
As a film buff, I’m thinking Avengers: Doomsday would probably see a pretty big drop in attendance after Dune 3 comes out – Marvel films usually open huge and then taper off quickly. Honestly, they should really take Sony up on their offer to get that IMAX boost and have a full week without any new releases competing for attention. There’s just no logical reason to keep it on December 18th anymore.
