Avengers: Doomsday Corrects Thor’s Post-Endgame Arc Issues

Avengers: Doomsday seems to be exactly what Thor needed after the events of Endgame. After a somewhat controversial appearance in the 2022 film Thor: Love & Thunder, the Russo Brothers appear to be steering the character back towards a more popular direction.

I just watched the teaser for the new Avengers: Doomsday movie, and it’s really interesting! It looks like they aren’t undoing anything from Love & Thunder – actually, it seems like they’re building on it. But honestly, the little bit we saw confirmed that two of my biggest issues with the last Thor film are going to be addressed in the next Avengers movie, which comes out in 2026. I’m really excited about that!

Thor Wielding Stormbreaker In Avengers: Doomsday Makes WAY More Sense

I thought the ending of Thor: Love and Thunder was a little strange when it came out in 2022. Thor gave the Stormbreaker axe to his adopted daughter, Love, but decided to use Mjolnir again himself. It was a clearly comedic choice, especially since Love had just drawn all over Mjolnir with markers, adding a face, ribbons, and other decorations.

Although amusing at the time, that choice felt like a step backward for Thor’s development throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was particularly odd considering Thor himself created Stormbreaker in Avengers: Infinity War.

The latest trailer for ‘Doomsday’ shows Thor wielding Stormbreaker again, which is a welcome sight for fans. The weapon really symbolizes how much Thor has developed as a character throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Though Thor used both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker in Avengers: Endgame, the latest preview hints he might leave Mjolnir with Jane Foster (now wielding it as Mighty Thor) to protect her. This makes sense, as the preview suggests Thor will have to leave her behind to deal with upcoming threats.

Thor’s New Avengers Look Also Makes Up For Love & Thunder’s Controversial Costume

The change in Thor’s appearance in the new Avengers trailer is also significant. His return to the shorter hair and simpler, sleeveless outfit – similar to what he wore in Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War – is a welcome sight for many Marvel fans. This is a contrast to the more controversial blue and gold armor from Love and Thunder, which showed a tendency for the MCU to overcomplicate costume designs.

The Russo Brothers perfectly balanced Thor’s strength and emotional vulnerability in Infinity War and Endgame, and this new appearance in the Doomsday teaser seems designed to remind viewers of that successful portrayal. The teaser shows a Thor who is tired from fighting and looks worn down, but is still ready to fight again to protect his loved ones.

Look, Doomsday doesn’t pretend Love and Thunder never happened – Thor still acknowledges his daughter. But honestly, as a viewer, it’s a relief to see Thor’s look and feel revert to a more classic, well-received era of the MCU. That last film really divided fans, and this feels like a welcome visual reset for the character.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release in theaters on December 18th, 2026 from Marvel Studios.
