The Marvel Cinematic Universe is always growing, releasing new movies in theaters and shows on Disney+. Everyone is especially excited for the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, which promises to be a huge event. Writer Michael Waldron recently shared a discarded idea involving Jonathan Majors’ Kang and the Young Avengers, and it was a surprisingly bold concept that many fans, myself included, would have enjoyed seeing come to life.
Details about Avengers: Doomsday are scarce, but the movie will feature a huge cast of heroes. Though Robert Downey Jr. is set to play the main villain, Doctor Doom, Marvel Studios once considered building a major film around Kang the Conqueror. Writer Michael Waldron recently shared some of those earlier plans during a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, revealing:
Jeff Loveness and I came up with a fun idea for the Young Avengers: they’d defeat a version of Kang, but then discovered it was his first day being Kang! He literally had a card asking for patience. We were really excited about it, though a little disappointed when we realized it might have been setting up the lizard-like Kang from the end of ‘Kang Dynasty’. Still, it was a fun brainstorming session.
What a twist that would have been! Imagine the Young Avengers finally defeating Kang, only to discover they were fighting a less experienced version of him. It would have been a fun mix of action and humor, and honestly, I’m a little disappointed we won’t get to see it. Unfortunately, with Jonathan Majors no longer involved with the MCU, the studio decided to scrap that storyline.

Disney+ offers a streaming library that includes all Marvel Cinematic Universe content. You can start a subscription with ads for as little as $11.99 per month. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. Check out the deal here.
It’s surprising how much work went into the next Avengers movie, originally called The Kang Dynasty. Jonathan Majors’ villain was being built up through shows like Loki and the film Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. However, for reasons outside of the story itself, those plans were cancelled, and the focus shifted to Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom instead.

For years, Marvel fans have eagerly anticipated the formation of the Young Avengers, especially after several young heroes appeared in recent movies. The ending of The Marvels hinted at this team coming together, with Ms. Marvel reaching out to Kate Bishop and identifying Ant-Man’s daughter as a potential member. However, it’s still unclear when we’ll actually see them all team up in a movie.
The cast list for Avengers: Doomsday didn’t mention any of the characters expected to be in the Young Avengers, leaving their future uncertain. Perhaps they’ll be revealed for Secret Wars instead? One can hope!
You’ll find out everything when Avengers: Doomsday comes to theaters on December 18th of next year, as part of the 2026 movie lineup. Secret Wars will be released shortly after, on December 17, 2027.
