A rarely seen Iron Man suit quietly appeared in live-action, even though it wasn’t featured prominently in any of the movies. Throughout his time as Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. wore nineteen different versions of the Iron Man armor, most of which contributed to the suit’s now-famous and recognizable design.

While most of Iron Man’s 85 suits from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are quite similar, there are some notable differences. Suits like Red Snapper, Peacemaker, and Hammerhead were highly experimental and therefore looked very different from Tony Stark’s usual designs. Other suits, such as the Hulkbuster and Mark 50, were created as significant technological advancements.

Concept art for Avengers: Infinity War by Phil Saunders reveals several early designs for Tony Stark’s Iron Man Mark 50 suit. Some of these discarded suit ideas closely resemble the “All-New, All-Different” Iron Man armor from Marvel Comics, featuring a smooth, rounded helmet, a flat, rectangular torso, and a streamlined design with red body pieces covering the neck and shoulders. The shape of the faceplate and nose suggest these designs were inspired by the 2015 comic book relaunch.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man suit underwent a noticeable redesign between Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War. The Mark 50 suit was significantly more streamlined than any of Tony Stark’s previous designs, even compared to his comic book versions. However, Avengers: Endgame shifted back towards a more robust look for the Mark 85 suit, retaining the nanotech features but making it appear less sleek than the Mark 50.

This would create a single, unified timeline where all Marvel characters – like Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men – can exist together. To make this work, Iron Man would likely need to be recast with a new actor, separate from Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic performance.

As a huge Iron Man fan, I’ve been thinking about how to really make the next suit feel new. Forget just a color swap – we need a total redesign, something that visually signals a fresh start. And honestly, the Model Prime armor from the comics is perfect. It’s so different from the classic, more blocky suits Robert Downey Jr. wore. The Model 51 has this incredibly sleek, angular look, and instead of a mouth, it often has this cool, glowing hexagonal light. Seeing that come to life on screen would instantly tell audiences, ‘This isn’t the old Iron Man, this is something different,’ and really establish a new hero for today’s generation.

Now that Robert Downey Jr. has stepped down, Marvel’s new Iron Man has a lot of exciting possibilities. They could explore storylines and suit designs from the comics that wouldn’t have fit the more realistic early Marvel movies, like the terrifying Endo-Sym armor or the massive Godkiller suit. While Downey Jr.’s performance as Tony Stark is legendary, there are still many unadapted comic book stories and suit designs that could be brought to life on screen, offering a fresh take on the character.
