One of the original cast members has surprised fans with a suggestion for the highly anticipated prequel or sequel series.
In a recent interview on the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, Greg Baldwin – the voice of Iroh after Mako’s passing in 2006 – shared what story he’d most like to see explored. He said that while Zuko’s journey of redemption is often discussed, he’s most interested in seeing a similar story for Ozai, Zuko’s father.
Original Avatar: The Last Airbender Star Pitches New Fire Lord Ozai Story
Baldwin explained that stripping the world’s most powerful person of their power would be a truly humbling experience, and he’d be fascinated to witness it. He also expressed interest in seeing a different side of Iroh, the beloved character from Avatar: The Last Airbender – specifically, a version of him that isn’t always kind and gentle. He’s intrigued by the idea of exploring Iroh’s backstory and potential for a more complex portrayal.
Throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender, and as the show’s main villain (played by Daniel Dae Kim in the Netflix live-action adaptation), Fire Lord Ozai scarred his son, Zuko, hoping Zuko would capture the Avatar and regain his father’s approval. Though Zuko ultimately found his own path to redemption, Ozai remained a clear villain until his defeat by Avatar Aang, after which he was imprisoned for his actions.
Following the end of the war, Ozai, the former Fire Lord, continued to appear in related stories, notably in the Avatar: The Last Airbender — The Promise comic book series. This story focused on the Harmony Restoration Movement, an attempt to remove all traces of Fire Nation control from the Earth Kingdom. While seemingly straightforward, the situation became complex when Zuko defended a Fire Nation colony that had become well-integrated into the Earth Kingdom. Surprisingly, this idea originated with Ozai himself, as Zuko sought his father’s counsel even while he was imprisoned and clearly motivated by his own desires. This demonstrated that Ozai’s influence over the Fire Nation would remain strong for as long as he lived, even without power or freedom.
