Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Jet Makes His Magic: The Gathering Debut In Four New Cards

Magic: The Gathering players got a detailed preview of their upcoming set based on the popular show, Avatar: The Last Airbender. The set follows Aang’s story, from his discovery after being frozen in ice to becoming the Avatar – a powerful master of all four elements and a force for peace. While it’s a big challenge for Aang, he’s lucky to find plenty of friends who help him along the way.

Even though Jet, the leader of the Freedom Fighters, may not always see eye-to-eye with us, he’s still an ally. TopMob has a first look at four new cards featuring Jet and his revolutionary team, even though he wasn’t present for this week’s big reveal.

Okay, so I just got a look at the Jet, Freedom Fighter card, and it’s pretty awesome! He’s a legendary creature – a human rebel ally – and when he comes into play, he deals damage to one of your opponent’s creatures equal to how many creatures you control. That’s a huge boost! And even when Jet goes down, you get to give two of your creatures a +1/+1 counter each. He costs five mana to play, which isn’t super cheap, but something like Sozin’s Comet could definitely help with that. Honestly, he feels like a classic ambush attacker – red and white, perfect for a fast, strong move. I can definitely see him fitting into a lot of decks!

Let’s look at Jet’s Brainwashing. This inexpensive Sorcery only costs one mana to cast and prevents a creature from blocking this turn. You can also pay three mana for an added effect: you gain control of the creature until the end of the turn! When you take control, the creature is also untapped and gains haste. As a bonus, Jet’s Brainwashing creates a Clue token, which you can later sacrifice to draw an extra card.

The Magic: The Gathering spell Price of Freedom, originally from the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, is gaining popularity with the release of the Avatar: The Last Airbender set. When cast, it destroys one of your opponent’s artifacts or lands. The opponent then gets to search their library for a basic land card, which enters the battlefield tapped, and their library is shuffled. You, as the caster, then draw a card. At only two mana, Price of Freedom is a powerful spell for its cost.

Next, we have Treetop Freedom Fighters, a creature ally who’s a Human Rebel. It costs three mana to play. While it’s a modest 2/1 in terms of power and toughness, its low cost, combined with the Haste ability and the fact that it creates a 1/1 Ally token when it enters the battlefield, makes it a strong choice for the early game.

I really like how powerful and interesting these cards are. It’s ironic that Jet, despite hating the Fire Nation, fights in ways that are surprisingly similar to them. This is reflected in how well his cards actually work with Fire Nation cards, and it makes me hopeful that the rest of this set will capture the deeper themes and story of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The Magic: The Gathering and Avatar: The Last Airbender collaboration will be available starting November 21st, but fans can pre-order booster packs and starter sets today.
