Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Avatar: Fire & Ash
The villains in Avatar: The Way of Water were compelling and complex, especially Colonel Miles Quaritch and Varang. However, I’m really interested to find out more about the major villain hinted at in Avatar 4 and 5.
The Avatar movies feature the RDA, a powerful company and military force made up of greedy humans who are exploiting the planet Pandora for financial gain. Recently, the new comic book, Avatar: Fire & Ash, hinted at a key RDA member who might play a significant part in James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels.
Quaritch & Varang Were The Ultimate Villain Power Couple in Fire & Ash
The movie Fire & Ash really solidified Quaritch and Varang as compelling villains. Like Jake Sully in the first Avatar, Quaritch deeply immerses himself in Na’vi culture, but for the RDA’s benefit. He also teams up with a Na’vi clan that actively opposes Pandora’s guiding spirit, Ewya, and embraces fire as a central part of their beliefs.
I have to say, Varang is a really compelling villain. The fact that she’s turned her back on Eywa and is leading the Ash People gives us a much darker side of the Na’vi we haven’t really seen in these films before. I’m definitely hoping both Quaritch and Varang come back in future Avatar movies, but I was really hooked by the hint of a brand new, important character coming from the RDA in Fire & Ash – I can’t wait to see where that goes!
Will We Finally Meet The RDA’s President In Avatar 4 & 5?
Avatar: Fire & Ash introduces a new villain – the President of the RDA – a character we haven’t seen directly in the films before. Outside of the movies, it’s established that this President is Parker Selfridge’s (Giovanni Ribisi) father, and this connection is confirmed on screen by General Ardmore (Edie Falco) in Fire & Ash.
Okay, so the new Avatar movie finally explains why Jake Sully’s son, Parker, is back on Pandora. Basically, he got a super rare second chance to reconnect with the planet – and honestly, it seems like being the President’s son definitely helped with that! Knowing that changes how you see his role as the administrator of Hell’s Gate. It’s clear he’s really trying to impress his dad and prove he deserves to be there, beyond just his family name.
Since Parker failed again – losing Spider and proving unable to replicate the natural ability to breathe on Pandora, plus the significant loss of RDA resources – it’s logical that the RDA President would take a more hands-on approach in future Avatar films. He’s essentially out of options when it comes to giving his son another chance.
Whether the next Avatar films bring the story back to Earth or send a human leader to Pandora, fans can likely anticipate finally seeing the main villain representing the humans on screen in a future installment.
James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire & Ash is now playing in theaters.
