has just revealed the return of a key character in the newest trailer. The next Avatar movie is highly anticipated after a long period of development. Following the huge success of the first Avatar in 2009, James Cameron immediately began planning sequels. Avatar 2 was initially planned for 2014, with the third film to follow in 2015. However, the project faced repeated delays, with the filmmakers prioritizing strong storytelling and cutting-edge technology before starting production. Avatar: The Way of Water finally premiered in 2022, and the third movie is scheduled for release this December.
The newest Avatar film is adding layers of moral complexity to the world of Pandora. The first two movies focused on the Na’vi defending their home against the harmful actions of the RDA, but director James Cameron has stated that this next installment will present a more nuanced conflict. Varang, a member of the Mangkwan clan, has been identified as the film’s antagonist. She has turned away from Eywa and is determined to cause trouble for Pandora’s heroes through violent means. Recent previews have already showcased the extent of her destruction, and her alliance with Quartich. Thankfully, this development has also paved the way for the return of a key Pandoran character who was hinted at in the new footage.
Toruk Returns In The New Trailer For Avatar: Fire And Ash
The latest footage finally shows Toruk again! It gives us a lot of insight into what’s coming for the story on Pandora, including the news that Spider can now breathe Pandora’s air without assistance. But one of the most thrilling reveals is the hint that Jake’s mount from the first movie, Toruk, will be returning. Toruk is a massive leonopteryx – a creature that looms over all others on Pandora, like the tsurak and the ikrans. Anyone who successfully bonds with this incredible beast earns the title Toruk Makto, or rider of the Last Shadow, and is seen as a symbol of unity among the Na’vi clans.
Toruk is a significant figure in the world of Pandora, and its story has grown beyond the movies. A touring stage show by Cirque du Soleil, called Toruk – The First Flight, premiered in 2015. This show took place thousands of years before the events in the first Avatar film, and it seemed to be the legendary tale of the Omatikaya people’s ancestors, as Neytiri mentioned in the movie. To protect the Tree of Souls from a natural disaster, a group of young Omatikaya members set out to find the powerful leonopteryx and ask for its help in saving their home. The play featured Toruk as a large orange and red puppet, staying true to the creature’s appearance in the original film.
Thankfully, Toruk returns in the newest trailer, and he appears just as formidable as ever. The connection between Toruk and Jake is still evident, and this will undoubtedly play a major role in the events of the upcoming film. As they confront both the Mangkwan clan-the ash people-and massive invading RDA forces, it’s clear the tension and the stakes are higher than ever before for the world of Pandora. This makes bringing Toruk back essential, particularly considering how meaningfully the incredible creature has been used throughout the series.
Toruk And Jake’s Relationship Explained
As a huge fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the connection between Jake and Toruk. In the first movie, Neytiri shared the legends of Toruk with him, explaining that throughout all of Pandora’s history, only five Na’vi had ever managed to tame this incredible creature. Her great-great-grandfather was actually the most recent one! Knowing how everything is connected on Pandora, it’s believed you can only bond with Toruk when there’s a real need for it. So, when Jake successfully tamed this enormous beast, it earned him a title that instantly commanded the respect of all the clans. It was a really powerful moment and showed how deeply Jake was embracing the Na’vi way of life. It really cemented his place amongst them, and I loved seeing that unfold. Pandora’s connection to its creatures is just amazing!
This respect was crucial during the events of the first movie. After the Omatikaya clan lost faith in him-when the RDA’s original plan for Jake was exposed-he needed to do something truly remarkable to regain their trust. To achieve this, Jake flew high into the sky, seeking out Toruk. He realized the most powerful predator wouldn’t anticipate a threat from above, and used this to his advantage, climbing onto the creature’s back and forming a Tsaheylu connection through his neural queue. Luckily, this worked, and Jake was welcomed back into the Omatikaya clan. It was a pivotal moment in his journey.
Showing respect for the Omatikaya people, and all the Na’vi clans, is central to their way of life. Because the RDA was defeated in the first movie, Jake didn’t need to ride Toruk as urgently anymore. We saw him say farewell to the magnificent creature at the end of the first film, and in the second film, he and his family tried to live more discreetly after Quaritch started pursuing them. While it was enjoyable to see Jake riding skimwings and ilu in the second film, many viewers definitely missed the powerful impact of Toruk. The enormous banshee was a vibrant and impressive part of the visually stunning world.
Over the centuries, only a handful of the Na’vi have formed a bond with Toruk, making Jake’s connection with him especially significant. In Avatar: The Way of Water, Neytiri proudly tells Ronal and Tonowari that her husband, Jake, is Toruk Makto. This title still carries weight, even though Jake relinquished his bond with Toruk, realizing he was no longer required. Luckily for viewers, the impressive sight of Toruk returns, and the stunning imagery of this powerful creature will likely play a major role in
What The Return Of Toruk Makto Could Mean For The New Film
While audiences are thrilled to see Toruk return, it actually foreshadows trouble for the characters in the film. Throughout the story, a Na’vi bonding with Toruk has always happened during a time of crisis. For example, Jake first connected with Toruk after the destruction of Hometree and the desperate fight to protect the Omatikaya clan. This led to intense conflict and significant loss of life. Even though the Na’vi ultimately resisted the RDA in that battle, they suffered heavy casualties, with many dying in the violent and devastating fighting.
The newest conflict seems incredibly large. The trailer reveals not only Varang attacking the Windtraders with Quaritch’s Recombinants, but also a massive offensive by the RDA. We see all sorts of mechs and ships in the trailer, including the very powerful Crab Suits. These attacks seem bigger and more intense than anything we’ve seen before, strongly suggesting that the conflict between the Na’vi and the humans has reached a peak. It’s therefore apparent that the Metakayina and the Omatikaya can’t withstand this overwhelming threat on their own and will need the assistance of Toruk.
Despite the Na’vi clans uniting and the Tulkuns possibly joining the fight, the RDA’s power continues to grow. The new trailer reveals not only advanced weaponry, but also technology that lets humans breathe on Pandora without masks. Things get even more complex with a neural link added to Spider’s hair, which allows him to connect with an ilu. While this is beneficial for Spider, who is deeply connected to Pandora and its Na’vi inhabitants, it hints at troubling possibilities for the future – how humans might take advantage of the planet and its resources. This could lead to exploitation.
The newest trailer shows Jake realizing that if humans can breathe on Pandora, the Na’vi are in serious trouble. This means humans can colonize the planet, making it a new home instead of simply exploiting its resources. This, along with the frightening danger posed by Varang and her ash clan, paints a bleak picture for the Na’vi’s future. It’s great to see Toruk will be back, and that Jake will once again become Toruk Makto, but even that might not be enough to overcome the overwhelming threats facing their world. Let’s hope the Na’vi find a reason for optimism when Avatar: Fire and Ash comes out in December.
