Avatar: Fire And Ash Has A Big Death Scene, But One Actor Isn’t Sure It’s Final

Everyone’s been eagerly awaiting Avatar: Fire and Ash since the beginning of 2025, and now it’s finally been released. Like all great, sweeping stories, Avatar films aren’t afraid to let characters die. And in Fire and Ash, there’s one particularly significant death we need to discuss. WARNING: Spoilers follow.

The Major Death Scene In Avatar: Fire And Ash

The movie Avatar: Fire and Ash ends with a surprising scene: Stephen Lang’s character, Quaritch, falls to his death while interacting with the Sully family. What makes it notable is that Quaritch actually causes his own fall, immediately after Jake Sully had rescued him from a previous fall. The movie doesn’t show where he lands, which leaves open the question of whether he might still be alive. Because of this ambiguous ending, I was eager to ask Lang what he thought of the scene.

What Stephen Lang Told Us About Quaritch’s Death

TopMob recently spoke with the actor and learned some fascinating details about the scene where his character dies. He shared the following:

When I see that happen, I don’t voice what I’m really thinking – which is, ‘I don’t care anymore.’ It’s a moment of just giving up and saying, ‘This is too complicated, I’ve said enough.’ As far as we can tell, things are going badly for him, and it seems like it could be the end. But he’s faced death before – he died in the first film and nearly died in the second – so it’s hard to predict what will happen next.

As a critic, I really connected with that scene – it felt like the character just completely let go, and it’s fantastic to hear the actor describe it that way. It really captures the spirit of the moment – a total ‘what the hell’ decision that felt incredibly authentic.

Quaritch’s story in Fire and Ash is complex and likely left him questioning his role on Pandora. Although he died in the 2009 film Avatar, he was resurrected in a Na’vi body for Way of Water with the mission of finding Jake Sully.

In Fire and Ash, Jake Sully begins to truly become one of the Na’vi, developing a relationship with Verang and growing closer to his son, Spider, who identifies with Pandora despite being human. It makes you wonder if the possibility of harming Jake’s son started to bother him, and if he simply lost the desire to fight Jake.

Disney has scheduled more Avatar films for release in 2029 and 2031, but James Cameron has said their success at the box office will decide if he actually makes them. This means we’re not sure if we’ll ever find out what happens to a certain character.

Now that Fire And Ash is out in theaters, critics have given it generally positive, though sometimes mixed, reviews (we gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars). Variety reports the film is expected to earn between $340 and $365 million worldwide during its opening weekend. One question fans have is whether the character Quaritch is truly gone, but I believe his story has reached its conclusion.
