As a big fan of both the Alien and Predator universes, I’ve been trying to figure out exactly where Predator: Badlands fits into everything. Seriously, when does it take place? Does it connect to the stories we’ve seen in Alien: Earth or the new Alien: Romulus? Or is it way further down the line? The movie doesn’t spell it out, but there are a ton of little hints about its place in the timeline. The film, Put Your Soul on Your Hand (currently showing in New York and soon to be released in more cities), is made up of video calls with Hassona, a young woman who often smiles even when she’s scared or upset. While her lively and curious personality shines through, the calls are constantly disrupted. The connection is poor – the video and audio cut out and freeze frequently, making it hard to understand what she’s saying. These technical issues actually emphasize her fragility, making it feel like she’s reaching out from a faraway, dangerous place – a world of constant bombing and fighting. She speaks casually about terrible events, like finding her aunt’s body near their destroyed home.

The opening credits of Wicked: One Wonderful Night immediately show it was filmed at the Dolby Theatre – the same venue as the Oscars! This is a striking choice, especially since the film is clearly aiming for awards this year. It almost creates the impression of a world where there’s an annual Oscars ceremony dedicated solely to Wicked. As a reminder, the first Wicked movie received ten Oscar nominations and won two awards last year. I see this as the beginning of a high-profile awards campaign to surpass that success this time around.
