Australia will soon ban social media platforms, including Twitch, for users under 16 years old.
Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, first proposed age restrictions for social media users on September 10, 2024, and those rules are now set to launch in the coming weeks after a year of preparation.
Beginning December 10, 2025, social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube will be required to limit access to users under the age of 16.
For months, people have wondered which platforms would follow suit, and now it’s official: Twitch is joining them. As ABC News first reported, Twitch has confirmed that starting December 10th, new accounts won’t be allowed for underage users, and existing accounts belonging to minors will be deleted shortly after.
Twitch joins Australia’s list of banned social media platforms for children
On November 21, 2025, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant confirmed that Twitch would be included on the list.
Although the new policy initially created uncertainty for Twitch due to video games being an exception, the eSafety group considers Twitch to be more than just a gaming platform.
According to the eSafety website, Twitch is a platform where people, including children in Australia, primarily watch and interact with live streams and other posted content.
Twitch is now following new rules designed to protect children online. The Australian government has stated that any social media platform which doesn’t make a reasonable effort to remove users under the age of 18 could be fined up to $50 million.

We’re still evaluating whether to add more platforms beyond Twitch in the coming weeks. As of right now, here’s the complete list:
- Kick
- Snapchat
- Threads
- TikTok
- Twitch
- X (formerly Twitter)
- YouTube
Several platforms, including Meta, are already starting to remove users under the legal age limit before the December 10th deadline.
