Australia will soon ban teenagers under 16 from using several social media apps, and now Twitch has been added to that list.
Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, first proposed age restrictions for social media users on September 10, 2024, and those rules are now set to begin within weeks, a year after the initial announcement.
So, starting December 10th, 2025, it looks like a bunch of the big social media sites – Instagram, YouTube, and others – are going to start cracking down on who can use them. Basically, if you’re under 16, they’ll be restricting access. It’s going to change things for a lot of younger players and content creators, that’s for sure.
Twitch has confirmed it will soon restrict access for underage users. Following months of rumors about other platforms doing the same, ABC News first reported that new sign-ups from users under the age of 13 will be blocked starting December 10th. Twitch also plans to remove existing accounts belonging to underage users shortly after that date.
Twitch joins Australia’s list of banned social media platforms for children
On November 21, 2025, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant confirmed that Twitch would be included on the list.
Although the new policy initially left Twitch in an unclear position due to an exception for video games, the eSafety group considers Twitch to be much more than just a gaming platform.
According to the eSafety website, Twitch is a platform where people, including children in Australia, primarily watch and interact with live streams and other posted content.
Okay, so Twitch is making changes to follow a new rule in Australia. Basically, the government wants to keep kids off social media, and if platforms like Twitch don’t do what they can to block younger users, they could get hit with a massive fine – like, up to $50 million! It sounds like they’re trying to make sure teens and kids aren’t using the site, and Twitch is working to comply with that.

We’re still evaluating whether to add more platforms beyond Twitch in the coming weeks. As of right now, here’s the complete list:
- Kick
- Snapchat
- Threads
- TikTok
- Twitch
- X (formerly Twitter)
- YouTube
Platforms such as Meta are already starting to remove users under the age of 13, ahead of a December 10th deadline.
