This story takes place thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It follows a diverse group of characters – elves, dwarves, humans, wizards, orcs, and harfoots – as they face the return of Sauron. Sauron is trying to create the One Ring, which he intends to use to control all of Middle-earth.

Okay, so The Rings of Power is getting a lot of different reactions, and that’s fine. But honestly, if you’re a fantasy fan, you need to check out The Shannara Chronicles. It’s a show with Austin Butler from before he was huge, and it’s criminally underrated. It follows Wil Shannara, who’s basically an ordinary guy suddenly thrown into this amazing world of elves, nomads, and magic users. He has to learn to use these powerful Elfstones to stop a seriously terrifying demon army led by this ancient evil, the Dagda Mor. Trust me, it’s a wild ride!

The Shannara Chronicles Is a Mesmerizing and Compelling High Fantasy Epic

Long after humanity disappeared, a new world emerged from the ruins of an old one, now divided into Four Lands. Three centuries ago, a devastating war split these lands, with each now governed by a different race. The elves rule Westland, home to the magical Ellcrys tree. Every year, seven elves compete in a dangerous trial called the Gauntlet, with the winner becoming the Chosen—responsible for guarding the Ellcrys, which keeps a prison of banished demons, known as the Forbidding, securely locked.

During a crucial test, Princess Amberle, portrayed by Poppy Drayton, is the last to touch the magical Ellcrys tree, earning her place in the elite guard. However, touching the tree gives her a terrifying vision: she sees herself killing the other Chosen. Determined to protect them, she runs away from the elven capital, Arborlon. Though she escapes a deadly attack by a shapeshifter impersonating her, the Ellcrys is weakening, and as the final Chosen, Amberle is tasked with finding a way to heal it.

Wil Shannara inherits magical Elfstones from his mother on her deathbed, but he’s skeptical they’ll actually work, as most people believe magic disappeared centuries ago. While journeying to Storlock to train as a healer, he meets Eretria, a wandering nomad and skilled thief played by Ivana Baquero. Eretria tricks Wil and steals the Elfstones, and the two unexpectedly team up with the last Druid, Allanon, to protect a powerful tree called the Ellcrys and stop an ancient evil, Dagda Mor.

I recently checked out The Shannara Chronicles, which originally aired on MTV, and it’s a pretty interesting adaptation. The first season doesn’t follow the very first Sword of Shannara book, but instead jumps right into the second one, The Elfstones of Shannara. Apparently, creator Terry Brooks made that choice because the initial book lacked strong female leads, and Elfstones offered a better opportunity for that. One of the things that really kept me hooked was the romantic tension – a love triangle developed between the characters Wil, Amberle, and Eretria. It added a nice layer to the fantasy storyline.

Elfstones centers around the idea of accepting responsibility, even when it’s something you’d rather avoid – a feeling many people understand. This theme works well with the story’s plot, as Wil is an unwilling hero forced into a difficult situation and becomes the only hope for the Four Lands. The book also looks at how magic and science aren’t so different, suggesting they’re really just two sides of the same thing.

The adaptation stays faithful to the original stories and aims to be respectful of readers who expect the source material to be honored. One early change is in the opening scene: elves participate in the annual gauntlet, a blindfolded race through the woods. The first seven elves to touch the Ellcrys are then selected as the Chosen.

In the novels, people chosen to be protectors are selected by the magical tree. If the tree touches someone’s shoulders and shows them a vision, that person becomes one of its guardians. The first part of the book moved slowly and didn’t work as well on TV. However, the series starts with a fast-paced and exciting event – a gauntlet – which immediately draws viewers into the fantastical world of The Shannara Chronicles.

Originally, The Shannara Chronicles premiered on MTV as the network began creating more live-action dramas, similar to shows like Teen Wolf and Awkward. Although MTV initially renewed the fantasy series for a second season, it moved to Spike TV when it aired in 2016. Unfortunately, it was then canceled, and attempts to find a new home for the show were unsuccessful.

The Shannara Chronicles Is Perfect for Fans and Haters of The Rings of Power

Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s grand world of The Lord of the Rings, The Shannara Chronicles isn’t based directly on one of his books—unlike other adaptations. This might explain why some viewers feel it differs from the rest of the Lord of the Rings series. However, whether you love it or dislike it, The Shannara Chronicles is definitely worth watching.

If you enjoyed The Rings of Power, you’ll notice many similarities in The Shannara Chronicles. Both shows were filmed in the stunning natural scenery of New Zealand, showcasing beautiful forests, cliffs, and beaches. Like Galadriel in The Rings of Power, Amberle, an elven princess in Shannara Chronicles, is driven by a crucial mission to stop a growing darkness. While Galadriel fights against Sauron, Amberle steps up after the original Chosen is killed by a follower of Dagda Mor.

This fantasy series includes classic magical creatures like dwarves and elves, and, similar to The Shannara Chronicles, features druids who act as wise guides for the heroes as they face danger. However, some viewers have questioned the inclusion of wizards, as the original stories place them in a later era.

Even though some people don’t like changes to the story, Terry Brooks’ involvement with The Shannara Chronicles helped ensure it remained faithful to the spirit of his books. The initial Shannara trilogy, starting with The Sword of Shannara, explored three generations of the Ohmsford family. The first book focused on Shea Ohmsford, Wil’s father, while the third followed Wil’s children, Jair and Brin.

As a huge fan of Terry Brooks’ Shannara novels, I was really intrigued by the adaptation of The Wishsong of Shannara. It became clear pretty quickly that to make the series work, and to really keep Wil Ohmsford at the heart of everything, they had to make some changes to the original story. Brooks himself mentioned they needed to blend ideas from other books into Wishsong to make it all fit together, and he was involved in making sure it felt right. They weren’t afraid to borrow bits and pieces from across his other novels to build a more complete and exciting adventure for Wil. It was a collaborative effort to give us a Shannara story that felt true to the spirit of the books, even if it wasn’t a direct page-to-screen translation.

Austin Butler Has Skyrocketed to Stardom in the Last Few Years

Austin Butler gained widespread recognition for his critically acclaimed role in the 2022 film Elvis, a biopic about the life of Elvis Presley.
