As a seasoned movie buff with decades of cinema under my belt, I can’t help but feel a thrill at the news that Austin Butler is set to star in Luca Guadagnino’s reinterpretation of “American Psycho.” Having watched Christian Bale’s chilling portrayal of Patrick Bateman back in the early 2000s, I can only imagine what a modern take on this iconic role might bring.
Austin Butler has been cast as the lead in director Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation of “American Psycho,” penned by Bret Easton Ellis, which will be produced by Lionsgate.
Initially, there were ongoing whispers suggesting the role was given to Jacob Elordi (“Priscilla”), but it’s been confirmed that the part actually went to Butler. Interestingly, both Elordi and Butler portrayed distinct incarnations of Elvis in films directed by Sofia Coppola and Baz Luhrmann respectively.
The upcoming movie, penned by Scott Z. Burns (“The Laundromat”), is not a rehash of the 2000 film, but rather a fresh interpretation of Ellis’ book.
In the 2000 film adaptation set in the ’80s, Christian Bale played the role of Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street executive and serial killer. If Guadagnino, renowned for movies like “Call Me By Your Name,” “The Wound,” and most recently “Bones and All,” directs the upcoming version based on the book, there could be a stronger erotic theme than the original horror spoof. Guadagnino has explored genres such as horror in “Suspiria” and “Bones and All,” and he may approach the character of Patrick Bateman differently from previous portrayals, with Butler set to star in the movie.
Luca Guadagnino has recently completed filming “After the Hunt,” a project starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. His last two films, “Queer” and “Challengers,” received nominations at the Golden Globes. Daniel Craig was nominated for Best Actor for his role in “Queer,” while Zendaya is competing for Best Actress in “Challengers.” Moreover, “Challengers” has been nominated for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), and Best Music.
