Final Fantasy X is the tenth main game in the popular Final Fantasy series. Though it might not be as iconic as fan favorites like Final Fantasy VI and VII, it’s still a fantastic game and a great part of the franchise. It also features…
Okay, so the game takes place in this huge world called Spira, which is basically divided into three big areas. You play as Tidus, a star athlete, but things go south fast when this massive monster called Sin destroys his home. From there, you team up with a bunch of awesome characters to try and take down Sin and save Spira. One of them, Auron, is a real rock, always there to keep our spirits up when things get tough!
Auron Defeated Sin Once Before
During his journey, Tidus joins forces with a group of allies who players can control. He reconnects with Auron, a longtime protector, and together they meet Yuna, a summoner on a quest to defeat Sin – a huge, whale-like monster endangering the world of Spira.
Tidus, Auron, and Yuna are joined by other valuable allies, including Wakka and Kimahri Ronso. Each person contributes their own special skills to help the team.
Yuna is a summoner on a quest to find the “Final Aeon,” hoping it will give them an edge in their battle against Sin. Wakka, much like Tidus, is a blitzball player. Both Yuna and Wakka are determined to defeat Sin, no matter what it takes. Wakka, for instance, is driven by the loss of his younger brother to Sin, which motivates him to fight with the others.
Auron, like the others, is a skilled warrior with a past as a monk. However, he’s unique because he personally knew both Yuna’s father, Braska, and Tidus’ father, Jecht, and has faced Sin independently – something the rest of the group hasn’t done.
Ten years before the game begins, Auron teamed up with two others to fight the whale and temporarily defeat Sin. This means he’s much older than the rest of the team. While everyone else is between 17 and 25 years old, Auron is 35, making him the de facto leader and someone the others can rely on.
This is where things started to go wrong for him. After defeating Sin ten years ago, Tidus’s father, Jecht, asked him to look after Tidus. Auron took that responsibility to heart and has been watching over Tidus ever since.
The game eventually unveils a shocking truth: Auron didn’t actually pass on to the afterlife. He died from injuries inflicted by a summoner named Yunalesca, who showed him that his friends’ battles against Sin were ultimately pointless. Essentially, Auron’s spirit never reached the Farplane, Spira’s equivalent of the afterlife.
Man, it really messed me up when Braska and Jecht died, and the thought of it all being for nothing? I couldn’t let it go. That’s why I went after Yunalesca, even though I lost. Now I’m stuck as an unsent, kinda lingering around because I just can’t accept that’s how the story ends. I still have a job to do, you know? Gotta make sure Yuna and Tidus don’t end up like their dads. I need to protect them, even from beyond the veil.
After the last battle, the group lays Auron to rest, sending him to the Farplane. Though he appears in Final Fantasy X-2, it’s only through a voice that assists Yuna during combat.
Auron Delivers One of the Most Powerful Quotes in Final Fantasy History
Tidus and his friends finally confront the person responsible for Auron’s death. During the battle, they learn the truth about what happened to Auron, and Yunalesca attempts to persuade them that they need to have “hope.” However, this so-called hope is actually just a way of hiding the truth with lies.
Yuna is determined to face her sadness, even if it means rejecting empty promises of a better future. Yunalesca, understanding this, offers Yuna a quick and peaceful death to spare her from prolonged suffering. Yunalesca believes it’s preferable to find peace ‘in death’ rather than live with despair. This leads directly into one of the most iconic and often-quoted moments in the entire Final Fantasy series, delivered by Auron.
This quote is powerful because it recognizes that choosing to persevere – to keep living and fighting – is often the more difficult path. It also highlights that we all have the ability to control our own destinies. This is a key moment in the game, as it firmly establishes the group’s commitment to continue their fight, even when facing formidable opponents like Yunalesca.
Auron’s message resonates deeply because everyone experiences difficulties – loss, unfair treatment, or financial struggles. While peace might seem appealing to those facing hardship, many choose to persevere and keep moving forward each day.
Honestly, it feels like things have been incredibly tough lately. The pandemic really threw a wrench in everyone’s lives, and then you look around the world and see so much conflict, political turmoil, and economic hardship. It can be really discouraging! Sometimes it feels like there’s just so much negativity and division. But then I hear Auron talk, and it’s a powerful reminder that even with all the bad stuff, there’s still so much worth fighting for, the good and the bad, all of it.
