Aubrey Plaza released a public announcement following the tragic passing of her spouse, Jeff Baena, on January 3rd at a Los Angeles home. He was 47 years old. According to the LA County Coroner’s Office, his death was ruled as a suicide.
This is an overwhelming tragedy. We’re incredibly thankful for every bit of help that’s been extended, and we ask for understanding as we keep things private during these difficult moments.
As a cinephile penning my thoughts, I must share my insights about the dynamic duo behind some of indie cinema’s quirkiest gems – Aubrey Plaza and director, Michael Baena. This pairing has graced our screens with offbeat masterpieces like “I Heart Huckabees,” “The Little Hours,” and “Life After Beth.” Together they’ve spun tales that keep us guessing, leaving an indelible mark on the film industry.
Despite maintaining a low-key profile, their bond bloomed in 2011. Fast forward to May 2021, and they officially sealed their union. Their collaborations have been a testament to their creative synergy, with Baena directing Plaza’s directorial debut, “Cinema Toast.” This power couple has truly left an imprint on the silver screen, and I eagerly await their next collaboration.
Previously, Plaza mentioned that because they both work in the same field, she and Baena can relate to each other deeply, feeling each other’s emotions as if they were their own.
She expressed to People magazine in 2019 that while she and her partner share the ability to support each other and comprehend their shared journey, working together can still present difficulties. However, she noted, it’s all about finding balance. One advantage of their careers is that they are compelled to be independent, take time for themselves, and return. This keeps things interesting as nothing stays the same. Yet, she cautioned, spending too much time apart should also be avoided. She believes there’s a way to make it work and maintain a balance in doing so.
