The Intellivision, a classic gaming system that once rivaled Atari, is making a comeback. This new version, called the Intellivision Sprint, comes with 45 retro games and is a tribute to the original Atari 2600 competitor. Atari is now taking pre-orders for the console, which will be available starting December 5th for $150.
Atari announced that the Intellivision Sprint console was developed with Plaion. It comes with two wireless controllers and a USB-A port to allow users to add more games. The console is pre-loaded with games like Baseball, Soccer, Astrosmash, Boulder Dash, and Sea Battle, and includes custom controller overlays for each game.
Atari is excited to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Intellivision by relaunching the classic console for fans. According to Matt Burett, VP of Strategic Operations at Atari, taking on such a beloved brand is a significant undertaking and a great addition to their company’s work.
As a long-time gaming fan, I was really surprised to hear that Atari bought Intellivision in May 2024! They also got most of the old Intellivision games, which is awesome. It’s a bit sad though, because the Amico console – that was supposed to bring Intellivision back – still isn’t out, and now it looks like it won’t even *be* called Intellivision anymore.
Late in 2023, Atari released the Atari 2600+, an updated version of the classic console with modern features like widescreen compatibility. Also in 2023, Atari acquired the game developer Digital Eclipse, who are now creating the Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection.
