Astronaut proves you can play D&D in space after rolling D20 without gravity

An astronaut recently figured out how to roll a twenty-sided die in space, confirming that it is possible to play Dungeons & Dragons off-planet.

In 2025, Rabea Rogge became the first German woman to travel to space, flying on SpaceX’s Fram2 mission. The mission used the Crew Dragon Resilience spacecraft to orbit Earth, passing over both the North and South Poles.

Over the course of their three-day mission, the crew focused on studying the planet’s poles. However, Rogge also managed to make an unexpected but important discovery: a way to play Dungeons & Dragons in zero gravity.

D&D in space is “absolutely possible”

I always wondered how people played Dungeons & Dragons in space – I mean, how do you roll a d20 when it would just float away? But Rogge, who you might remember from the Fram2 mission, recently posted on Instagram and showed us it’s totally doable, and surprisingly simple! It’s awesome to see they’re still finding ways to have fun up there.

In the video, while floating in space with Earth visible in the distance, the astronaut explained that she and her team discovered a fun way to reveal a number: they’d spin an object, release it, catch it, and then use the space between her fingers to show the result.

Even though she didn’t roll the perfect 20 she was hoping for, she proved that you can definitely have fun and immerse yourself in space-themed roleplaying games.

She shared a photo of a beautiful, twenty-sided glass die, saying it made her excited to play Dungeons & Dragons or another space-themed game soon. She described herself as someone who loves traditional pens and paper.

This news isn’t a huge deal for most people, but it’s fun to learn the Artemis II astronauts can play Dungeons & Dragons during their mission – when they aren’t dealing with expensive equipment malfunctions, of course.
