As a die-hard Assassin’s Creed fan who has been with the series since its inception, I must say that Ubisoft’s recent moves have warmed my heart. The 10th anniversary of Assassin’s Creed Unity brings back fond memories of navigating the intricate streets of Paris during the French Revolution. The game’s meticulous recreation of Notre Dame, despite a few artistic liberties, was nothing short of breathtaking.
2021 signifies the 10-year milestone for Assassin’s Creed Unity, being the 8th installment in Ubisoft’s enduring series. This game is set amidst the French Revolution in the late 1700s Paris, boasting a painstakingly detailed replica of the city, including the iconic Notre Dame cathedral. However, Ubisoft has confessed to making certain adjustments to Notre Dame’s appearance, as revealed in a recent video released concurrently with the cathedral’s reopening, five years following a destructive fire event.
According to the video, it was decided that the famous spire of Notre Dame should be featured in the game despite being added to the cathedral in 1859 – more than seven centuries after the events depicted in Assassin’s Creed Unity. Ubisoft chose to include the spire as it is now synonymous with the image of Notre Dame for contemporary viewers. The cathedral was originally built during the 12th century, and its construction took a total of 182 years to complete.
After the 2019 fire extensively damaged portions of Notre Dame Cathedral, nearly five years were required for its restoration. Remarkably, despite the cathedral being reopened, some of its repair work continues indefinitely.
Ubisoft unveiled a video, revealing their partnership with the Notre Dame visitors app. This collaboration will utilize assets from Assassin’s Creed Unity to show images of parts of the cathedral that are off-limits to the general public. Additionally, Ubisoft has made available for free on the Meta store, a VR experience called ‘Notre-Dame de Paris: Journey Back in Time’. This includes a virtual tour inside the cathedral and a hot air balloon ride over 18th-century Paris at the end.
In a simple and readable manner: After Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, which is the sequel to Unity, got an upgrade running at 60fps on current-gen consoles, it was announced this fall that the next game in the series, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has been delayed until February 14, 2025. This upcoming title will mark a new chapter for the contemporary storyline.
