Ubisoft is pushing ahead with the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows for consoles and PC, which is set for March 20th, 2025. In a special livestream event this month, they unveiled new gameplay footage and premiered the game’s story trailer. Pre-orders are now live on all launch platforms, granting players access to the Claws of Awaji expansion at no extra cost, offering additional content beyond what players can already discover with the Animus Hub.
Initially, it was announced that some gameplay elements would be initially edited due to their graphic nature, primarily affecting the game’s launch in Japan. This information was shared on social media, clarifying why certain visual aspects of the game were being altered at the outset.

On January 24th, 2025, Ubisoft Japan shared a tweet announcing that the Japanese version of their game would not match its North American and European releases at launch. This discrepancy is caused by the game receiving a CERO Z rating, which signifies that Shadows contains strong adult or graphic content, including gore and blood. As a result, it’s illegal to sell this game to anyone under 18 years old in Japan.
According to Ubisoft Japan’s statement (thanks to VGC for the translation), there are changes in the content of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows (CERO: Z) to meet the requirements of the reviewing organization in Japan. Specifically, the dismemberment feature has been removed from the game’s Japanese version, and the depiction of body parts has also been adjusted accordingly.
In summary, it appears that there may be noticeable discrepancies in the dialogue between the North American, European, and Japanese versions of Shadows. Specifically, Ubisoft has not yet disclosed the details about what dialogue changes were made for the game’s Japanese version.
