In Japan, the game “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” will undergo censorship because it portrays violence and gore. This version of the game has been given a mature rating by Japan’s video game rating board.
In the Japanese adaptation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as confirmed by Ubisoft Japan (through Automaton translation), there will be no depictions of dismemberment. However, players of other versions can choose to enable or disable this feature.

In Japan, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has received a CERO Z rating, which is similar to the North American ESRB’s M rating. This suggests mature content. The Japanese version will feature altered voice lines, but Ubisoft Japan has not provided any further clarification or details about these changes.
On previous occasions, CERO has intervened over depictions of dismemberment in video games. For instance, the 2023 remake of Dead Space was forbidden in Japan due to its graphic portrayal of severed limbs. However, this decision faced backlash when it was discovered that Stellar Blade, another game featuring dismemberment, could still be sold in Japan despite having a similar rating.
The game “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” is set in ancient Japan, potentially leading Ubisoft and the Japanese video game rating board to exercise greater caution during its release. Director Chris Benoit mentioned that the game was pushed back a second time to perfect the parkour movements on the architecture of feudal Japan.
In simple terms, the game titled “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” will be released on March 20 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Previously in our Assassin’s Creed Shadows preview, we mentioned that Ubisoft Quebec appears ready to unite the different time periods of Assassin’s Creed, but history has shown that such attempts have not always been successful.
