In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players will journey through a visually stunning open-world set in feudal Japan during the Sengoku period. The captivating narrative unfolds via two main characters, Naoe and Yasuke, much like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, which featured dual protagonists Evie and Jacob Frye. The primary distinction between Syndicate and Shadows lies in combat mechanics and character dynamics, as Naoe and Yasuke will have unique playstyles within the game, and their narratives will be explored individually to offer distinct stories.

Regarding the game’s storyline, Dumont was questioned about how much of the gameplay can be experienced with each character and whether players might miss significant narrative elements if they choose one over the other. Dumont stated that players wouldn’t feel like they were “missing out on a lot” because it would be up to the player’s preference which character they opt to explore the game content, as both will have their own “unique introductions and questlines”. However, the game changes based on which character players decide to play for most of the time.

In the central plot, the two characters are exceptionally well-matched since they offer distinct viewpoints. This dynamic works effectively when they collaborate, allowing players to switch between Naoe and Yasuke if they prefer one over the other. Rest assured, playing as either character won’t exclude you from any gameplay elements, according to Dumont. The game is designed so that players can freely choose their playstyle, with a few choices here and there that might pique your curiosity about how the story unfolds differently with different characters, but these choices won’t significantly alter the overall experience.
