Assassin’s Creed Boss Says “Ubisoft Asked Me To Step Aside”

Marc-Alexis Côté, who previously led the creative direction of the Assassin’s Creed games, has explained that he didn’t decide to leave the series on his own. He recently departed from Ubisoft after two decades with the company, including the last three years as a vice president overseeing Assassin’s Creed.

In a LinkedIn post, Patrice Désilets clarified that he remains a fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and that his departure wasn’t his decision. He explained that Ubisoft asked him to leave the project, and emphasized he wasn’t upset with the company. He stated, ‘I did not walk away. I stayed until Ubisoft asked me to step aside.’

Earlier this month, Ubisoft announced the creation of Vantage Studios, a new team that will be responsible for its major franchises, including Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry. As part of this change, Ubisoft has shifted leadership for the Assassin’s Creed series. While a different role was offered to a key figure, he explained it didn’t have the same level of responsibility or long-term vision as his previous position over the last few years.

Earlier this year, Côté was involved in the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Although not officially confirmed, there’s growing evidence suggesting the game will also be available on the Switch 2 in December. Additionally, Ubisoft reportedly canceled a planned Assassin’s Creed game set during the American Civil War due to concerns about potentially controversial content.
