The lead creative director for the Assassin’s Creed series has left Ubisoft. This announcement follows Ubisoft’s recent creation of Vantage Studios, a new division supported by Tencent, which will now be responsible for developing games in the Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six franchises.
According to IGN, Marc-Alexis Côté, who was Vice President and Executive Producer for Assassin’s Creed since 2022, was asked to lead the newly formed Vantage Studios (announced in March), but he turned down the offer.
In an email to Ubisoft employees, Vantage Studios co-CEO Christophe Derennes shared his frustration with Côté’s choice, explaining that Côté had a different vision for how Vantage Studios should be built and what it should achieve.
In 2005, Côté joined Ubisoft as a software engineer and worked there for over twenty years. During his time with the company, he contributed to games like Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and multiple titles in the Assassin’s Creed series.
Alexandre Côté played a key role in the Assassin’s Creed series, starting with leading the design of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. He then directed Assassin’s Creed 3, served as creative director for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and oversaw the development of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Starting in 2022 as the leader of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Côté began a project to connect future games through the Animus Hub, creating a more unified storyline. The recently released *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* was the first game launched as part of this new approach.
Ubisoft is thankful for Marc-Alexis’s significant contributions to the Assassin’s Creed series and the brand’s overall success. A spokesperson for the company told IGN that his leadership, creativity, and commitment have positively impacted both their teams and players. They expressed sincere gratitude for his work and wished him well in the future.
Recent reports indicate that the next Assassin’s Creed game, a version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, could be coming to the new Nintendo Switch 2 as early as December. Separately, Ubisoft reportedly cancelled an Assassin’s Creed game set during the American Civil War last year, citing concerns about the sensitive political environment in the US.
