Assassin’s Creed Actor Says That His Character Is Still Technically Alive

Nolan North, a hugely successful voice actor known for his work in countless video games and animated shows, recently learned a surprising detail about a character he plays. He thought the character was dead, but Ubisoft assured him they were actually just ‘technically’ still alive.

North was the voice of Desmond Miles in several Assassin’s Creed games. Desmond appeared in five games before his character was killed off in Assassin’s Creed 3. North only learned about Desmond’s fate after the game came out and he saw how fans reacted online.

I didn’t realize that scene was actually Desmond’s death scene until I saw people talking about it on Twitter,” North explained to Fall Damage. “I saw a tweet asking if I was upset he’d died, and I was confused because it didn’t feel like a typical character death – there wasn’t any dramatic reaction. Although, Ubisoft assured me he isn’t completely gone.

Eight years after appearing in Assassin’s Creed 3, the actor reprised his role in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla as a puzzling character called The Reader. The game’s ending reveals that The Reader is actually Desmond – or, more accurately, what remains of his consciousness, now existing within the Animus. Interestingly, Ubisoft had shared this information with the actor long before he recorded his lines for Valhalla, suggesting it wasn’t always the intended storyline.

North explained that the initial plan involved around eight or nine games featuring the character Desmond. However, as is common in the entertainment world, changes in development teams and creative leadership led to a different direction for the story, and he believes that direction has been executed exceptionally well.

I was so excited when Assassin’s Creed: Shadows finally came out this spring, even though it was delayed a few times! And I’ve been hearing whispers for ages about a remake of Black Flag – apparently, they’re planning to do it without the Animus, which sounds really interesting to me!
