Asif Kapadia, an Oscar Winner With ‘Amy,’ to Open Visions du Réel Industry Program

Award-winning British documentarian Asif Kapadia, known for his Oscar-winning film “Amy,” has been announced as the keynote speaker for the 23rd installment of the industry program at the Visions du Réel documentary festival in Nyon, Switzerland.

On April 6th, the director, screenwriter, and producer are scheduled to conduct a comprehensive workshop, marking the official kickoff of their industry program.

The festival commended Kapadia for consistently evolving a unique cinematic vocabulary, blending a wealth of personal archives, frequently unseen before, with thorough research and an insightful exploration of the psychological aspects of his character’s lives.

This individual is known for creating a film trilogy that explores the heartbreaking fates of extraordinary figures from diverse backgrounds and eras: “Senna” (released in 2010), which won an Academy Award for best documentary, is one of his notable works, along with “Amy” (2015) and “Diego Maradona” (2019).

He’s renowned for producing a trilogy of films focusing on the sorrowful journeys of exceptional talents across various backgrounds and eras. Among his widely praised movies are “Senna” (2010, Academy Award-winning documentary), “Amy” (2015) and “Diego Maradona” (2019).

His work combines elements from both documentaries and fiction, offering a unique blend that showcases the emotional impact of stories alongside the fact-finding rigor of investigative filmmaking. This approach allows for an intimate exploration of the lives of his characters and the people close to them.

Alice Burgin, who heads the industry at Visions du Réel, expressed her enthusiasm and honor in inviting Asif Kapadia to kick off our industry program. She believes that his extensive and varied body of work serves as a constant source of inspiration for film professionals worldwide. She hopes that by imparting his wisdom and insights into the craft, and by exploring his projects, this masterclass will establish a motivating atmosphere for the upcoming four days.
