As a seasoned cinephile who has traversed the labyrinth of film genres, I must say the teaser poster for “Ash” piques my interest like no other. The synopsis promises a psychological rollercoaster that I can’t resist, and with Eiza González, Aaron Paul, and the enigmatic Flying Lotus at the helm, it’s shaping up to be a cinematic tour de force.
The film production companies RLJE Films and Shudder have revealed the initial poster for their upcoming sci-fi horror titled “Ash.” This movie marks the second feature from Grammy-winning artist Steven Ellison, also known as Flying Lotus. It’s scheduled for a broad theater release on March 21, 2025.
On the strange world of Ash, Riya (Eiza González) is shocked to discover that her crew has been killed. Then a man named Brion (Aaron Paul) shows up to save her. What follows is a harrowing experience filled with mental and physical torment as Riya and Brion must decide whether they can rely on each other to make it through alive.
Besides Iko Uwais, Kate Elliott, Ellison, and Andrew B. Miller, we also have Beulah Koale joining the cast.
As a passionate admirer, I’d like to share that I, along with being the director, have also taken on the role of the film’s composer. The script was brilliantly crafted by Jonni Remmler. Nate Bolotin from XYZ Films and Matthew Metcalfe from GFC Films are the producers. Neill Blomkamp and Echo Lake Entertainment are serving as executive producers. Lastly, RJLE Films is responsible for distribution.
In the year 2017, rapper and producer Ellison introduced his first major work, “Kuso.” Subsequently, he contributed a section named “Ozzy’s Dungeon” to the anthology film “V/H/S/99” in 2022.
2015 saw the debut of Shudder, a platform created by AMC Networks, catering exclusively to fans of horror and thriller genres. Among its original productions are “Late Night with the Devil,” “Speak No Evil,” “Mad God,” “The Boulet Brothers Dragula Resurrection” and “Child’s Play: Chucky’s Return.
Ellison recently discussed with Hypebeast the differences between creating “Ash” and his earlier film, “Kuso.
He remarked, “It’s nothing like what we’ve done before.” Unlike ‘Kuso,’ which involved a lot of DIY work at home and frequent pleas to friends for help, ‘Ash’ was a full-fledged production. It was all very professional. I spent my days in an office, attending meetings under fluorescent lights. Working with seasoned professionals who have extensive industry experience was fantastic. New Zealand is known for shooting sci-fi and fantasy movies, so I found myself surrounded by people who worked on films like ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ projects helmed by directors such as Peter Jackson and James Cameron.
