When a highly awaited game is released, it’s always a thrilling moment for players eager to start a new experience. However, not all releases live up to the hype. We often see major games that disappoint players due to flaws or failing to deliver on what was promised.
It’s good news that a disappointing launch doesn’t always spell the end for a game. We’ve seen several examples recently where developers successfully turned things around, earning back the love of players. Some of these comeback stories have even become well-known legends.
Biggest comebacks in gaming history
Recently, a gamer named “furrynoy96” started a discussion online about impressive turnarounds in the gaming world. They pointed to games like No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077, which both had very difficult launches and faced a lot of criticism. Despite being initially written off, dedicated developers worked hard to improve them, eventually winning back players and earning positive reputations. The user then asked the community to share other examples of games that overcame similar challenges and bounced back from initial failures.

It didn’t take long for people to share their thoughts. Many commenters pointed out games that initially disappointed fans but were later improved by their developers. Popular examples included Total War: Rome 2, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, and Final Fantasy XIV. While many other games were mentioned, these three received a lot of attention.
It took almost a year of updates to fix the bugs in Rome II, but it was worth the wait. Like its predecessor, Rome, it wasn’t fixed overnight. Now, it’s a fantastic game and still one of my favorites – possibly even my most played.

Okay, so I was really frustrated with the way Star Wars Battlefront 2 launched – the whole pay-to-win thing was awful. But once they fixed that, it actually became an amazing game! And the best part? They didn’t stop there! They just kept adding tons of new content, which was incredible as a fan.

Final Fantasy XIV was a notable case.

Several games had rocky starts, disappointing players when they first launched. Total War: Rome 2 suffered from major technical problems, while Star Wars Battlefront 2 frustrated players with its in-game purchases. Final Fantasy XIV received criticism for bugs and simple gameplay. Fortunately, all of these games were eventually fixed with updates, allowing them to become successful later on.
