The X-Men are coming back in Avengers: Doomsday, but this could be bad news for some of its heroes, according to the latest Marvel news. I was thrilled when the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday came out, because it means we might finally see the original X-Men team join the Avengers and Fantastic Four in what could be one of Marvel’s greatest films.
One thing about the X-Men announcement seemed odd to me. Popular characters from the previous X-Men movies, like Jean Grey, Storm, and Rogue, weren’t included. I initially assumed they were being kept secret for the plot of Avengers: Doomsday. But a recent update suggests there might be a more concerning reason for their absence.
Marvel’s New Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Brings A Major Reveal
The trailer for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, currently shown with Avatar: Fire and Ash, centers on the X-Men. It particularly features Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Cyclops. The trailer is quite unsettling, depicting a ruined X-Mansion, and concludes with a heartbroken and enraged Cyclops unleashing a powerful optic blast.
The scene of Cyclops standing amidst the ruins of the X-Men’s home, with Sentinels appearing behind him, suggests a huge and dangerous fight where many heroes could have been killed. Although Beast, Mystique, Nightcrawler, and Gambit (played by Channing Tatum) will appear in the upcoming Marvel movie, the fate of other X-Men remains uncertain, and they may have perished in that battle.
The trailer features a striking voiceover from Magneto, who says, “Death comes for us all, that’s all I know for sure. The question isn’t are you prepared to die, the question is who would you be when you close your eyes?” Combined with images of the ruined X-Mansion, a heartbroken Cyclops, and the presence of Sentinels, it strongly implies that some X-Men characters will die in the film.
Two Marvel Movies Show What Avengers: Doomsday’s X-Men Fate Might Be
Marvel has a history of depicting large-scale deaths involving the X-Men, and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday might draw inspiration from past films. Specifically, it could echo the events of Logan, where Professor X’s declining powers led to the accidental deaths of many X-Men, with Wolverine being the sole survivor.
The movie Deadpool & Wolverine showed that the X-Men died while Wolverine was away, leaving him unable to protect them. Because Avengers: Doomsday involves the entire multiverse and incredibly high stakes, we should expect some major characters to die. Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed, it’s likely that Jean Grey, Storm, and other X-Men members are among those who have died.
