For fans of thrilling TV shows, discovering a new favorite is amazing, but finishing it can be surprisingly tough. It’s hard to say goodbye to characters you’ve spent so much time with and return to everyday life. Simple things feel less appealing when you’re not immediately able to dive back into a captivating story, like following Joe Goldberg’s antics or the Byrdes’ adventures in Ozark. Now comes the challenge of finding another show that will grab you just as much – and that often takes a lot of searching. (Being a TV fan can be tiring!)
I was absolutely hooked by Archive 81 when it came out on Netflix in January 2022, and I was devastated to find out it wasn’t renewed! It felt like we were left hanging with so many questions unanswered after that eight-episode thriller, and it’s still really frustrating that the creator didn’t get to finish the story they started.
‘Archive 81’ Is One of Netflix’s Greatest Forgotten Thrillers

Netflix
The Netflix series Archive 81 follows Dan Turner, who takes on the task of restoring old video tapes. These tapes reveal the story of Melody Pendras and a mysterious apartment building in New York City. Dan doesn’t actually meet Melody – he sees her on the tapes she created. The building has a dark history, possibly involving a fire and supernatural events, and Dan quickly begins to question who Melody really was.
The best thrillers aren’t just about surprising twists – they focus on how characters change and develop. While Archive 81 does have twists, what really draws you in are the characters, Dan and Melody, and the way their stories connect.
Many thrillers feature unsettling jobs, mysterious bosses, or characters stumbling into bizarre situations – and those are often the most compelling. But Dan’s story stands out. It’s not just about suspense; it delves into themes of mental health, personal drive, and family relationships.
‘Archive 81’ Season 2 Would Be Even Better
Whether you love them or not, the ending of Archive 81 Season 1 was designed to leave you wanting more, making you immediately want to start the next episode. Sadly, despite its popularity, it’s been four years and the Netflix thriller has only released that initial eight-episode season.
In a January 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly, the show’s creator, Rebecca Sonnenshine, discussed the possibility of making another season.
“It was always meant to keep going. We are always thinking about season 2.”
Sonnenshine revealed the show added a time-travel twist, with Dan finding himself in a hospital in 1994. With so many dramatic events in the finale, a potential Season 2 of Archive 81 promises to be even more captivating than the first. Dan now has some understanding of Melody and the demon Kaelego, and a more complete (though still incomplete) understanding of the Visser. Like other Netflix shows cut short before finishing their stories, the series ended on a very intriguing cliffhanger.
It’ll also be interesting to see Dan adjusting to life in 1994 – it could be quite entertaining! Though, he’ll likely be too focused on finding Melody and returning to his own time to appreciate things like the TV show My So-Called Life or discover up-and-coming bands. Still, just picturing the 90s hairstyles and fashion in those episodes is fun to think about.
As a huge fan of Archive 81, it really stings that we didn’t get a second season, especially hearing how much the people who made the show cared about it. Dina Shihabi, who played Melody, actually shared with Variety what she’d hoped to see for her character if the show continued. She said…
I’m hoping to see Melody become more assertive in the next season. The first season focused a lot on her shock and fear as she dealt with everything, but I’d like to see her take charge and actively fight for what she wants in Season 2.
It’s disappointing that Dan and Melody’s story is over, but fans can still enjoy the eight captivating, unsettling, and fun episodes that have already aired – until the next thrilling series comes to Netflix.
