Arc Raiders was a major hit when it launched in 2025, and it’s continuing to thrive. January 4th was the game’s most popular day ever, with a record number of players. Originally planned as a free-to-play game, Arc Raiders switched to a $40 price tag before release. According to Embark Studios head Patrick Soderlund, the team decided to charge for the game after seeing how well Helldivers 2, also priced at $40, had performed.
We studied successful games like Helldivers to help guide our own development, deciding that was the right direction for us, according to GamesBeat (via Eurogamer). It was a decision we made, and whether it was the correct one is open for debate. I’m glad we created a game that’s accessible and reasonably priced, allowing more people to give it a try.
The executive explained that they priced Arc Raiders at $40 to make it appealing to players, especially since it’s a multiplayer-only game with no single-player campaign. They wanted to avoid pricing it so high that it would be seen as too expensive for what it offers.
We want players to feel the game is worth the $40 price tag. Considering how much time people are putting into it, we hope they feel they’re getting good value for their money – that’s our goal.
Arc Raiders has surpassed 12 million copies sold across all platforms, generating over $350 million in revenue.
Arc Raiders is developed by Embark Studio, which is owned by the large South Korean gaming company, Nexon. While Embark’s earlier game, The Finals, didn’t perform as well, Nexon credits it with providing valuable experience that helped make Arc Raiders a hit, according to a statement to the Korea Herald.
I’m really excited for Marathon, and it sounds like Bungie is pricing it at $40 when it comes out in March. It’s cool to see another big game sticking with that price point!
With the huge popularity of Arc Raiders, it’s no surprise that Hollywood is interested in making a movie or TV series based on the game. However, no deals have been finalized yet.
Arc Raiders has been popular, though some players have criticized its use of AI-generated voices. The game’s developer, Embark, recently explained their decision, with CEO Soderlund stating that AI can be a valuable tool for both developers and gamers.
