Arc Raiders Now Features “Aggression-Based Matchmaking,” Dev Confirms

If you’ve seen more player-versus-player combat in recent Arc Raiders matches, it’s probably because it was designed that way. The game has been intentionally updated to encourage more skirmishes.

Embark Studios CEO Patrick Söderlund recently told GamesBeat that their popular shooter is now using a matchmaking system that tries to group players who enjoy similar playstyles, specifically those who are more aggressive.

When asked about how the studio connects players, Söderlund explained that they recently added a system that considers whether you prefer player-versus-environment (PvE) or player-versus-player (PvP) combat. This means if you enjoy PvE and want to avoid conflict with other players, you’ll be paired with more players who share those preferences.

Recent news appears to confirm what Arc Raiders players have been thinking for some time: the game is increasingly matching players with others based on how aggressively they play. Over the past few weeks, many have noticed tougher and more competitive matches. This is a shift from when the game first launched, when Arc Raiders was praised for having a friendly and supportive community – a contrast to more competitive and often harsh games like Escape From Tarkov.

I saw this interview with PC Gamer from December where they talked about “behavior-based matchmaking,” and honestly, it really got fans upset. It seemed to confirm what a lot of us had already suspected was going on, and people weren’t happy about it!

Now everything is clear, but matching players isn’t just about who has the most kills. According to Söderlund, Arc Raiders uses several matchmaking systems simultaneously. First, it considers player skill. Then, it sorts players into groups of one, two, or three. Finally, the game matches you with others based on how likely you are to fight them.

According to Söderlund, the team always anticipated needing systems like these to balance the game and create a fairer experience for different groups of players as the game became more popular.

This allows players who prefer the original, team-focused experience of Arc Raiders to continue enjoying it, while those who like more competitive, player-versus-player action can do that in separate game sessions.
