Arc Raiders Makes Progression Wipes Optional As Studio Puts Players’ Time First

Extraction shooters often feature a “wipe,” which resets all player progress. The developers of Arc Raiders, Embark Studios, are aware this can be frustrating, so they’re planning to make wipes optional through a system called Expedition Projects, allowing players to choose when to reset their progress.

At level 20, players can start working on Expedition Projects. Each Expedition lasts about eight weeks, and everyone contributes to the overall goal. When an Expedition finishes, players can choose to reset everything – losing their levels, skills, and items – but keeping their cosmetic items and achievements. If a player doesn’t finish an Expedition, they can continue where they left off in the next one.

This system aims to be fair to all players. Those with limited time won’t have to worry about losing their progress, and dedicated players will earn special cosmetic items, permanent account benefits, and temporary boosts for the next in-game event.

Virgil, the design director, explained that players receiving these benefits won’t become more powerful in gameplay compared to those who haven’t completed the reset. The rewards are purely cosmetic, offering a way to show off accomplishments. He clarified that this isn’t a perfect solution, nor does it create as significant a change as a full reset, but it’s designed to be fairer to everyone. The team wants to recognize and reward the time players have already invested in the game, as that’s important to them.

Arc Raiders will be released on October 30th for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Before the launch, Embark Studios is letting players try the game in an Open Test called Server Slam from October 17th to 19th on both PC and consoles. While your progress in the test won’t transfer to the final game, you’ll receive a special backpack design for use in the full version just for participating.
