Arc Raiders, the new shooter from Embark Studios, reached a high point in popularity this weekend with nearly 482,000 players online simultaneously on Steam. Interestingly, the launch of Black Ops 7 didn’t attract as many players as previous Call of Duty releases on Steam, potentially because players are currently focused on Arc Raiders.
The newest Call of Duty game, Black Ops 7, had a peak of 100,332 players on Steam during its launch weekend. This is significantly lower than the peak for Arc Raiders, which reached over 400,000 players. While it’s not a perfect comparison – Black Ops 7 is available on multiple platforms like Battle.net, the Microsoft Store, and PC Game Pass, while Arc Raiders is limited to Steam and the Epic Games Store – Black Ops 7 still launched with fewer players on Steam than previous Call of Duty titles.
Even though the previous Black Ops game was on Game Pass at launch, it still attracted over 300,000 players on Steam, which is nearly three times more than the new game. The previous installment, Modern Warfare 3, also had a strong launch, peaking at 190,000 players.
Call of Duty’s relationship with Steam has been complicated. For years, Activision sold the game exclusively through its own platform, Battle.net, before returning to Steam in 2022. Now, with Microsoft owning Activision, the PC player base is even more divided, as many are likely playing through the Game Pass subscription service.
Black Ops 7 isn’t selling as well on Steam as past Call of Duty games, likely because it’s up against strong competition this year. Arc Raiders recently had a successful update and community event, quickly unlocking a new map. Battlefield 6 is also performing well, with nearly 300,000 players online over the weekend, and remains a popular choice just behind Arc Raiders on Steam.
