Yesterday, Arc Raiders reached a peak of over 250,000 players exploring the world for items or gathering in the city of Speranza simultaneously. This set a new record on Steam for the most players ever online at once in a shooter game that combines scavenging with player-versus-player combat.
I was really excited for Arc Raiders, and it looks like a lot of other people were too! SteamDB shows we hit over 264,000 players on launch day, October 30th. It was so popular, the servers actually had some trouble keeping up. Honestly, it’s a great sign for Embark Studios, and it seems like they were right to be confident about taking on giants like Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7!
While Arc Raiders initially set a Steam record for PvP extraction shooters, it’s debatable whether that type of gameplay is essential to the genre. Currently, Helldivers 2 is the most popular game in the genre on Steam, and its player base grew significantly after its release on Xbox Series X|S. Escape From Tarkov also saw a peak of over 300,000 concurrent players on Steam, briefly surpassing Battlefield 6 in popularity last week.
It’s worth noting that Escape From Tarkov is a major influence on this topic. The game, widely credited with popularizing the extraction shooter genre, is officially launching on Steam on November 15th with the full version 1.0 update. However, players who already own the game will need to purchase it again to play through Steam.
Arc Raiders is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, meaning the player base is bigger than what Steam numbers alone would suggest. Thankfully, the game supports both cross-play and cross-save functionality. If you’re interested, you can find details on how to get Arc Raiders hatch keys elsewhere.
