Apple’s $229 iPhone Pocket is literally a sock for your phone

Apple recently introduced a new accessory – a $229 cleaning cloth called the iPhone Pocket – created in partnership with the Japanese fashion label Issey Miyake.

This simple pouch is made from a single piece of knitted fabric, and Apple designed it to feel like a soft cloth. It’s made in Japan and stretches to comfortably fit any iPhone, with a little extra room for small items like cards or keys.

The iPhone Pocket is available with either a short strap for $149 or a longer, cross-body strap for $229, and comes in lemon, peacock, cinnamon, and purple. A unique feature is that the stretchy pouch lets you briefly see your phone screen without fully removing it.

Apple describes their new iPhone case as a stylish and convenient way to carry your phone. Issey Miyake’s lead designer, Yoshiyuki Miyamae, highlights the case’s ability to let users personalize how they carry their iPhone, and Apple’s design VP, Molly Anderson, calls it a smart, added pocket.

This special edition accessory will be available starting November 14th. You can purchase it online and at certain Apple Stores in the US, UK, Japan, France, Italy, China, Singapore, and South Korea.

The design is inspired by Issey Miyake’s A POC line, which focuses on simple, single-thread construction and clothing that can expand and adapt.

Apple is revisiting a quirky product from its past. Back in 2004, the company sold colorful fabric covers called iPod Socks for $29 (about $48 today). Now, after 20 years, Apple is selling a similar fabric accessory for iPhones, but this time it costs significantly more.

The iPhone Pocket is a surprisingly lavish accessory, proving Apple’s knack for turning even basic items – like a simple knitted pouch – into a desirable status symbol, especially during the holidays.
