Apple will reportedly use Google’s Gemini AI for next-gen Siri overhaul

Apple is planning a major update to Siri, potentially using the same cutting-edge AI technology that powers Google’s assistant. This move aims to help Apple compete more effectively in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is close to a deal to pay Google around $1 billion annually for access to the Gemini AI model, which has 1.2 trillion parameters. This technology will likely be used to significantly improve Apple’s Siri voice assistant.

As a big Apple fan, I’ve been hearing a lot about their AI plans! Apparently, this year they were checking out what OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google had to offer with their large language models. Ultimately, they decided to go with Google’s Gemini for now. It sounds like it’s a temporary solution while Apple keeps working on building up their own AI tech – which I’m really excited about!

Apple to partner with Google Gemini to build a new Siri

The next version of Siri is expected to launch with iOS 26.4 in Spring 2026. Codenamed Linwood, this improved assistant will use Google’s Gemini technology for important tasks like summarizing information and planning, but Apple will still power many other Siri features with its own technology.

To keep user data safe, the Gemini AI model will operate on Apple’s secure, private cloud servers. This partnership is different from Google being the standard search engine in Safari – it’s expected to happen quietly, without any visible joint branding.

The project, internally known as Glenwood, is being led by Apple’s Mike Rockwell and Craig Federighi. This collaboration represents a major step for Apple in the world of AI, and indicates a change in how the company plans to add advanced voice features to its devices and services.

Apple is still working on its own large language model to eventually replace Gemini. They’re aiming for a model with around 1 trillion parameters, and it could be available in products as soon as next year. In the meantime, Google is continuing to improve Gemini with updates like Gemini 2.5 Pro.
