A new competition is heating up on Prime Video. The show has been steadily rising on the platform’s list of most popular TV shows and is now just one spot behind Young Sherlock for the number one position.
The sci-fi series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is now the second most popular show on Prime Video in the U.S., according to FlixPatrol. It’s achieved this ranking even though viewers need an extra subscription to Apple TV through Prime Video to watch it.
The eight-episode mystery drama, Young Sherlock, is available to watch on Prime Video without any extra cost for subscribers. Since March 6th, it’s been the most popular show in the United States, directed by Guy Ritchie.
Young Sherlock Seems Destined to Lose the Top Spot
Although Young Sherlock is currently available on Prime Video, it’s likely to fade from public attention faster than shows released weekly, like Monarch. That’s because all eight episodes of Young Sherlock were released at once on March 4th, letting viewers binge-watch the entire series, while Monarch has new episodes coming out every Friday through May 1st, keeping it in the conversation for longer.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really intrigued by Young Sherlock. It’s a series created by Matthew Parkhill, and it shows a much younger, and frankly, messier version of the famous detective. The story kicks off with him getting tangled up in a murder mystery at Oxford, and it puts everything on the line for him. According to what I’ve read, he throws himself into solving it – though he’s totally unprepared! – and ends up uncovering a huge, worldwide conspiracy that completely changes his life. It sounds like a really fresh take on the character.
Hero Fiennes Tiffin leads the cast, with Dónal Finn and Max Irons playing younger versions of James Moriarty and Mycroft Holmes. Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, and Colin Firth also star in the film.
With Young Sherlock, director Guy Ritchie revisits the world of Sherlock Holmes after a 15-year break. He previously made two action films – released in 2009 and 2011 by Warner Bros. – starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson.
Monsterverse Fans Cannot Get Enough of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
The popularity of ‘Monarch’ on Prime Video shows that audiences are still excited about Legendary’s Monsterverse, even after a two-year wait for the new season, which launched on February 27, 2025. The second season primarily takes place in 2017, moving the story closer in time to the events of the 2019 film ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’.
The second season of Monarch revolves around a new, dangerous monster called Titan X. The original cast returns, including Kurt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Joe Tippett, and Anders Holm, who will once again play Lee Shaw, Cate Randa, May Olowe-Hewitt, Kentaro Randa, Keiko Miura, Tim, and Bill Randa.
In Season 2 of Monarch, a younger Lee Shaw will appear, set in 1984. Joby Harold will be the showrunner for this new, currently unnamed series, and will also be in charge of overseeing the entire Monsterverse franchise for Apple TV.
You can watch Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+, or through the Apple TV channel on Prime Video.
